Chapter 16 by Johanna Johanna

What's next?

Half an hour (or so) later

You may have been telling yourself that you genuinely intend to participate in the show as a "normal" guest interested in the outcome... But the fact you barely paid attention to any of the introduction and read your own sounding borderline robotic tells you that you should not deceive yourself at least. You are here just for the excitement of what will happen if you refuse a candidate... And for testing yourself, of course. Seeing how much more of the treatment you already started to get would you still find enjoyable.

Now you find yourself in an interesting setting. There is a row of two-person tables with water bottles and glasses. There are twelve of them, to be precise, to match the number of Asian girls receiving suitors. The setting resembles that of a restaurant and the tables are sufficiently spaced out to give the prospective couples privacy... from one another, that is. Not from the cameras or the audience. That would be a bit purpose-defeating. At least the seat is comfortable enough, as you feel you might spend quite some time in it if you are determined to push yourself to outlast other girls (or at least most of them). Speaking of other girls, you did not get a chance to mingle with them much (possibly the hosts are concerned you may form some sort of joint strategy if given too much time to talk), but it seems from the limited communication that you did have they are primarily focusing on finding a good match. Other sides of the show really appear secondary and incidental.

The introductions are finally over. After the last of the girls finishes speaking, twelve first candidates are invited one. You note with interest that one of them is a girl and she is randomly directly to the Asian girl next to yourself. The man who sits across the table from you is probably in his 30s with a general white-collar look, if not a particularly high-up white collar. After the announcement that "round one" (as if it is a martial arts competition) begins and a brief round of applause from the audience, he starts talking about himself... Not knowing that you are not going to give him much of a chance.

Do you listen?
