A knock on your door reminds you that your duties for the afternoon are not quite over, since you owe one of your students a further twenty-seven strokes, plus extras.

"Enter!" Your voice wouldn't normally pass through the heavy door, but your window is still open, so Natalie and Minseo hear and obey, the former limping heavily, whilst the latter sashays with carefree grace. You put them back in the same position as earlier and tell them that Natalie will receive an extra three strokes for falling down, bringing the total to thirty, then you take up the cane once more and place yourself ready to resume where you left off.

Natalie's voice when she asks for the repeat of the thirty-fourth stroke is clear and strong, although you don't expect that to last for long.

There's a livid weal just above her hip where the last one landed, so that's the target for the first three, by the end of which she's shaking like a leaf and already gasping for breath, but her break seems to have done her good and she remains safely on her feet, fundamentally steady, despite her involuntary trembling.

You use the three extras for falling, in order to fill in the thin stripes of unblemished flesh that separate the four wide bands of deep bruising, each blow to her ribs sending a shudder through her torso with a hollow-sounding impact.

Next, you have Minseo swap sides so you can cane her tute-partner's left efficiently and proceed to administer the dozen with just as great severity as the previous set. You start at the bottom this time, working your way up to the armpit, revelling in the inexorable increase in anguish that leaves your subject straining to speak, her thanks and requests for more barely above a whisper. You're proud of the girl's fortitude, but the punishment for breaking eye-contact remains and you're not sure her ribs can take another full dozen.
