When, after a few moments, Imogen still hasn't started to relax, you feel the need to say something.
"Come on, girl," you start, in what you hope is an encouraging tone. "How long have we been working together, now? We should be able to have a conversation without you being on tenterhooks all the time."
Unfortunately, the response isn't what you were hoping for, as she bursts into tears.
"I'm sorry, Professor," she blubs, "I just don't want to let you down again. That whipping you gave me was just so painful—it still is—I don't know how I'd cope if you gave me another."
"Well, that's the point, isn't it? To make you want to do better."
"Yes, Professor, it's very effective! I just can't stop thinking about it."
"That's a good thing, but you have to make sure it motivates you, but it doesn't distract you."
"Yes, Professor, I'll try."
