Chapter 8 by dialectic dialectic

Does Sarah choose you, or some other boy? Who do you pair up with?

Sarah chooses you

Her eyes ultimately rest on you. As Sarah walks slowly up to you, the girls start moving to negotiate the apparently very tricky question of who will choose which study partner.

Sarah approaches you, flushed red. "Hi," she says bashfully.

"That was intense," you say to her.

She smiles slightly. "Yeah. Um, do you know anything about what's going on? The... girl's projects?"

You shake your head. "I don't think any of us boys know what's going on."

Sarah makes a slow, quick, nod. "No, I guess not. I don't know if it's the same for every girl. I, uh, have some... dramatic interpretations that I'm being graded on. Mine's about... this class. That's why," she gestured awkwardly, "um," she added waving at her outfit, "why I'm wearing this."

"It's, uh, nice," you reply.

Sarah nods again, relaxing slightly. "Um. I want to keep things as simple as possible. I know we don't talk much, but you seem nice, and I hope you'll help me with the whole project. You'll... you'll see why. But I want to know if you can keep a secret."

You're not sure why she's asking this, but the fact that she's nearly doing X-rated cosplay gives you some idea. "My lips are sealed."

Sarah nods. "That's good enough for now. Um, I think we should ask if we can go to the library."

This is very interesting, and Sarah seems to have some idea of what she's doing. You follow Sarah's lead, nodding.

The two of you approach Mrs. Fletcher. "Excuse me, Mrs. Fletcher," Sarah says, quietly. "I'd like to pair up with Michael for my... practical project. May we go to the library for some quiet study?"

Mrs. Fletcher looks to Sarah unsympathetically. "I'm afraid not," she said. "You seem to have misunderstood the project description. You may pair up with a single student, for a project with public dimensions, or you may do work with multiple students to be assessed behind closed doors."

Sarah's face turned bright red. "Oh." she said.

"Your initiative is admirable," said Mrs. Fletcher, "but I'm afraid I must now ask you to choose. Will you undertake a series of public exhibitions with Michael, or a series of collaborations for closed-door assessment?"

What in the huh? Does Sarah choose public exhibitions or closed-door assessment?
