You motion April to sit as well and begin the lesson, discussing the girls' essays in detail. You point out where Debbie's prose could be tightened up and give April advice on how to further improve her style and content, whilst encouraging your students to give their own input.

As the tutorial continues, you notice that April is saying very little unless asked a direct question; Debbie, although she is less versed in the subject matter, has a lot more to say, whether because she is less afraid of saying something wrong and looking like an idiot or because she has an unfounded faith in her own talents, you're not sure. However, this annoys you. April should be one of your best students, but her **** to contribute is really hampering her progress.

After yet another enquiry results in an ill-informed verbal meander from Debbie, when you are quite sure that her tute-partner could have provided an insightful and pithy response had she wished, you decide to take action. With a sigh, you pick up her tawse.

"April, the tutorial system is expensive to operate and if you're not going to contribute then your place should have gone to someone who will. From now on, I'm going to strap you whenever you fail to answer a question or are reticent about demonstrating your knowledge. Do you understand?"

The young brunette looks like a rabbit in the headlights as she stammers out her affirmative reply, but it is just a few moments later that she allows Debbie to take the lead once again and you have **** but to carry out your promised chastisement.
