Chapter 25
by
Obedient Lorelei
What will you do this afternoon?
Go to the football match
University level sport has never really grabbed you, but something about today's match has captured your attention. Besides, you know one of your freshers is playing. You wander along to the university sports grounds and spend a few confusing moments trying to find the pitch, before realizing that the main event is actually happening elsewhere. You check the website and discover that the university owns a sports field near St. Martin's, where the match will be taking place. It's not too far to walk, so you head off, but almost as soon as you reach the main road, you see a bus going in your direction. You put on a spurt to reach the stop before the bus can pull away, but you needn't have worried; there are a couple of dozen others wanting to board as well, so it takes a minute to get everyone settled.
The vehicle is packed, mainly by students, although there are a few townies and friends here too, distinguishable by the fact that the women dress rather more conservatively than girls enrolled at the university. Well behaved young ladies with college scarves round their necks immediately stand to offer you their seat when they see you, but you wave them away. The journey should be short, especially since the driver won't stop to pick up any more passengers, being so close to capacity. People are in understandable high spirits and you overhear snatches of conversation from several directions, mostly about the upcoming fixture or season. It surprises you to hear that the opposition today is a national league team; if the girls are playing against league opponents, then they're doing considerably better than either the men's or women's teams were before you found the Rulebook.
The bus clanks through the narrow streets towards its destination, affording you the first view of the grounds. You're not sure exactly what you were expecting, but not the pair of grandstands facing each other across the pitch, one for home fans and one for away. There are actual turnstiles to get in, not entirely unlike those at a professional club and there's a queue stretching almost all the way to the bus stop. As your transportation draws to a halt and disgorges its passengers, you begin to wonder whether you'll be able to just walk in or you need tickets or a reservation. Even if you can get in, you don't fancy waiting in line for ages.
How will you get in to see the match?
