Demis are commonly bred by professional breeders before being sold to their new masters on markets. They can never truly be free, as even when their master sets them “free”, the master is still legally responsible for the and may punish them as he sees fit. Therefore, for a master to set a free, not only has the master to be a very benevolent one, but he also needs to trust his not to cause any trouble for him, which is why there aren’t many free demis, although they do exist. The reason for this policy is that demis are viewed as inferior to humans, little more than animals, and therefore need to be controlled. While demis are born into slavery and may never escape it, all humans are born free. Demis age and mature at a different rate, which is distinct for every demi species, meaning that their age of maturity varies wildly.

When in public, slaves must always wear a collar to make their status apparent. The only exception to this rule is for “free” demis, i.e. demis that have been set free by their masters., which in practice means that free demis never wear any kind of collar. Additionally, all slaves have a subcutaneous chip that can be read by everybody with a smartphone or even at a distance with special scanners. This, combined with a strong police and heavy border controls, makes escape for any nigh impossible.

Since demis are always slaves and slaves can’t form contracts or sue, any demi beyond the immediate protection of its master will often get harassed, no matter whether they are free or not. For this reason, demis tend to develop a deep need for their master, even though they aren’t always treated kindly. Human slaves on the other hand are treated with more kindness, since although they are slaves, they are still also humans.
