Chapter 4 by Control Freak Control Freak

Who will be his next test subjects?

The family across the street

It didn't take long for Otto to decide what he wanted to do. The best place to test the Role Swapper would be somewhere that is close to home and had a decent pool of test subjects, and the family of four across the street fit that criteria perfectly. Plus, the idea of messing around with the stereotypical 'nuclear family' was too much of a temptation to resist.

Of course, the main issue was getting inside. Despite living across the street from them, Otto didn't actually know the family that well. He had briefly spoken to the parents, Thomas and Samantha Mason, once before, but being the antisocial nerd he was he never really followed up on them. He'd never even talked with the kids, Daisy and Victor, so he had no idea what they were like. They in turn probably just saw him as the creepy neighbor who spent all of his time in the garage and only went outside to work and get groceries, which to be fair was not an inaccurate assessment in the slightest. Still, that meant that him just going over and asking to hang out for a little bit would be seen as highly unusual at best, and assuming they even let him in the front door everyone would be immediately suspicious of his intentions. Otto didn't want that, but short of breaking in while everyone was away and hiding in the closet (which would be way worse), it was unavoidable.

Or at least, it would be, if he didn't just invent the Role Swapper.

Turning the device over in his hand, Otto hatched a plan. He hadn't intended to test the device on himself so soon, but science was all about the risk of exploring the unknown. By swapping himself with one of the members of the family he would be able to walk right into the house and be accepted as one of them. Scratch that, he WOULD be one of them, as far as anyone else would know. But even with the awareness features turned off, the Swapper's built-in protection of the wielder's perception should ensure that he remembered who he really was. And since he lived right across the street, he could easily swap back into his old life when he was done with his experiments.

Otto did a quick system check of the settings, then pointed the device at himself and hit the first target selection button. Then he went over to the window and locked his gaze towards the house across the street. All he needed was a target and he would be in. After spending a good chunk of time waiting, he saw a car park in front of the house and a figure step out. As they walked up to the front door, he selected them as the second target. In his haste, he didn't really register who exactly he was targeting, but he was too impatient and excited at what he was about to do to care at the moment. Once the second target button lit up, he took a deep breath, then hit the big red swap button.

Who does Otto end up swapping with?
