Chapter 3 by struiner struiner

What's next?

Samuel Mitchell

In the realm of forgotten artifacts and arcane curiosities, there exists a legendary relic known as the Ring of Lies. A ring, unremarkable in its appearance, it bears an enigmatic power beyond the comprehension of mortal minds, with a history veiled in obscurity.

The ring has revealed itself to be a twisted enigma on many occasions. An unassuming silver band, perhaps forged from the very shadows cast by the fires of forgotten kingdoms. Yet, it was not its appearance but its inherent ability that set it apart. The Ring of Lies, as it came to be known, possessed the power to warp reality itself, to twist the truth into enigmatic shapes as it saw fit.

Those who dared to wear it found themselves at the mercy of its enigmatic whims. The ring acted in silence, never announcing its presence or the changes it wrought. With subtlety and a touch of perverseness, it selected the wearer's words and transformed the world to be contradictory, defying logic and reason. The Ring of Lies danced with the truth, a sinister waltz that obscured reality in a shroud of deception.

In the hands of those who possessed it, the ring wove a complex tapestry of altered statements and improbable events. It was a relic that played with the very fabric of reality, making fact and fiction indistinguishable. The truth became a slippery eel, impossible to grasp, as the ring cast its web of deception.

The ring's current owner, Samuel Mitchell, was blissfully unaware of it’s powers. It had been a present from his sister, a souvenir she had picked up during her trip to Italy. He turned it in his fingers, it was surprisingly light for a solid silver band. He slid it on his left hand, pretty much forgetting about it as he continued working.

It was an overcast Friday afternoon, Samuel straightened out his coat as he prepared for his usual lunchtime walk to the nearby park. He noticed a figure waiting near the entrance, trying to get his attention. With her bright smile and enthusiastic demeanor, Sofie stood out like a sunbeam on an otherwise dreary day.

"Sofie, isn't it?" Samuel asked, his surprise evident as he approached her.

"Yep, that's me!" Sofie chirped. "I've been trying to get to know my new colleagues, and I've heard you take these walks during lunch. Mind if I join you?"

Samuel was taken aback by the sudden intrusion on his solitary routine, but her friendly approach was disarming. He nodded, trying to hide a hint of his introverted . "Sure, I could use some company today. Let's go."

As they strolled through the park, Sofie chatted amiably about her experiences at the company. Samuel, typically reserved, found her enthusiasm endearing. He didn’t have the heart to discourage her.

Sofie's vivacity contrasted sharply with Samuel's introspective nature. She talked about her love for hiking, dancing, and all sorts of adventurous activities. Inwardly, Samuel couldn't help but feel a pang of envy at her zest for life and her willingness to embrace new experiences.

As they continued their walk, the conversation gradually turned to Samuel's interests. Sofie was genuinely interested in understanding him better. She asked about his hobbies and what he did in his free time.

Samuel hesitated for a moment before admitting, "Well, I'm not much into adventure or trying new things. I prefer my quiet walks. “ he carefully added “ And I have some unconventional hobbies that most people wouldn't find interesting."

Sofie's eyes sparkled with intrigue. "Unconventional hobbies, you say? That sounds fascinating! What are they?"

Samuel was caught off guard. He had never shared his unconventional interests with anyone before.

“Me and my wife, we… It’s… rather adult. You wouldn’t like it.“ The Ring of Lies softly shimmered.

After a short pause, Sofie spoke determined “Try me.“ She dared him “I’m an adult.“

“Yes. Well. You’re not into this, I can assure you.“ The Ring glowed. Samuel moved on without noticing.

“I…“ Sofie halted, momentarily confused. Samuel kept walking “Fine then, keep your secrets.“ She mumbled as she caught up with him, even though she felt an unfamiliar stirring that had not been there a moment ago.

They were near the end of their leisurely lunchtime walk. Standing near the entrance of their office, pausing for a moment.

Samuel, with a hint of a smile, turned to Sofie and said, "I must admit, Sofie, it's been a pleasant break from my usual routine."

Sofie beamed with appreciation, "I feel the same way, Samuel. I've been wanting to get to know my colleagues better, and I'm glad we had this chance to connect."

As they prepared to part ways and return to the office, Samuel extended his hand to shake Sofie's. "Best of luck with your endeavors, Sofie, both at work and in your mission to get to know your colleagues. I hope to see you again for another walk someday."

Sofie shook his hand warmly and replied, "Thank you, Samuel. I'll look forward to that. Take care, and have a great rest of the day!"

After his lunchtime walk with Sofie, Samuel returned to the office, his mind abuzz with thoughts of the unexpected encounter. The afternoon passed relatively uneventfully, with Samuel focusing on his work tasks, albeit with a slight distraction caused by the lingering memories of his conversation with Sofie. As the workday came to a close, Samuel wrapped up his tasks and prepared to head home, eager to reunite with his wife, Emily.
