Chapter 4

Where does Toby go next?

Visit his friend Matt

Deciding that having a fresh set of eyes to help him solve this problem, Toby decided to go to his friend Matt. The two met at the start of the term and became fast friends, sharing most of their classes together. Despite also studying engineering, Matt was one of the more sociable students in the program, seemingly knowing everyone and always making friends.

It wasn't just Toby and Matt however; Samantha, Matt's girlfriend from highschool, completed the trio. While she had her own set of friends and was more than glad that Matt had found a bestie, she often accompanied them because, as Matt put it, the two were a package deal. Not that Toby minded - Samantha was loads of fun, and very easy on the eyes. She studied psychology, and it was her and Matt's goal to set Toby up with one of her psych friends. Alas, thus far they've been unsuccessful.

After graduating high school, the couple had decided to attend college together and had bought a small apartment not far from campus. It was a two bedroom, bought early due to the fact that a friend of Samantha's also wanted to move in, but the girl backed out after the apartment was rented and the two were stuck with an extra room. Thankfully, both of their families were well off and neither had any trouble paying rent. The spare room also became a blessing whenever they threw a party; there were often drunk party goers who needed an extra place to crash.

Knowing that both Matt and Sam would be done class for the day, Toby wasted little time heading to his friends' place, and knocked on the door. It opened shortly after, Matt's small frame appearing in the doorway. "Toby! Hey man, what's cracking? You come to check out the spare room again?"

That was their thing - they were always asking him to rent out the spare room. "Nah man, just came to chill after class. You know how it is."

"For sure; come on in!"

Despite the two rooms, the apartment wasn't big. Beyond the sleeping space, it only had one sole washroom, the main living space, and a kitchen. And yet, Matt and Sam had decorated it to the best of their abilities; proudly owning a couple couches, the best chair and bean bags on the market, and the sickest beer pong table in engineering, decked out with neon lights and tiny cup holders to prevent the solo cups from moving. Toby took the liberty of sitting down on his favorite bean bag chair while Matt went and fetched him a beer from the fridge.

"So, what brings you here? You know, other than yours truly."

Toby just grinned as he grabbed the beer. "Here's the thing: I ended up buying a magic ring from some old guy."

"A magic ring?" His friend echoed after taking his own seat.

"Yeah, he called it the Ring of Threes. You simply point it to someone, say three worlds, and that person will change into whatever you say."

As he spoke, Matt took a swig from his beer, swallowing as he listened. "And you believed that? Come on man, I known you to be gullible but never stupid."

He ignored the jibe. "No listen, you'd be convinced too if you heard this guy sell it. He was-"

"An amazing salesman. And you got ripped off." His friend paused, taking another sip from his beer. "Alright, say it does have magic powers. Have you tried using it?"

He nodded. "On Kaylie Tang."

"That Asian girl who always has her nose in a book?"

"Yeah, her. I called her a shameless party girl."

Matt paused, considering. "And? Did it work?"

"I... I didn't see anything change, no."

Matt took another swig. "Ha! I half wished it did. That girl really needs to let loose and have a little fun. Another beer?" A minute later he sat back down, beers replaced, and eyed the glowing green ring on Toby's finger. "Okay, let's assume that it does have mystical powers. How do we test it?"

"That's why I came here. I thought you'd have an idea."

His friend paused, thinking. "Use it on me then."

"You can't be serious."

Matt shrugged. "Don't see why not. You want to know if it works? Change me!"

He sighed. "Alright, fine." and lifted his hand, aiming the ring right at his classmate.

What does he say?
