D&D Dynastic Delving
Welcome to the world of Eva.
Chapter 1 by Nemo of Utopia
Fair warning: this story is designed to be more of a game: it is intended to be read in game mode only: failure to do so can lead to things like infinite loops and chapters which connect to other chapters that just plain don't make sense because they are designed for conditions you have not met. This is your one and only warning!
The Labyrinth of Ambuscade: said to have been created by the gods as a hiding place for the Tree of Immortality when the world was young the Labyrinth has tempted the unwary and foolhardy for eons. The Labyrinth of Ambuscade is an ever shifting maze of stone, wood, brick, and steel that stretches for hundreds of miles beneath the central planes of the Queensland of Lore.
Many have dared the delving of it: few have returned. However those that have have done so laden down with gold and gems, treasures beyond counting. It is said that it was from the inscriptions on the walls that the Dwarves and the Elves took their systems of writing, and that it was here that the Gnomes first learned the precepts of alchemy, it is also said that it was here that a wicked and blasphemous sorcerer first unlocked the hideous rituals to turn himself into the first Lich, and that somewhere in the depths of it's spaces are monstrous things with no names, for no one who has ever met them has escaped to tell the tale.
You are an adventurer, part of the Adventurer's Guild of the Queensland of Lore, and you have made many enemies in the Queen's court. They therefore they have arranged to have you be Awarded a singular honor, the Rank of Count/Countess over the long defunct Castle Manorial of Ambuscade, which among other things gives your family the exclusive right and responsibility to delve into the labyrinth in search of the Tree of Immortality.
You have been accorded a count's compliment of 50 men-at-arms and a 'purse' of 10,000 GP to repair the castle, drawn on the royal coffers. You must then begin exploring the dungeon at once, for it is the eternal desire of the Queens of Lore that they should be able to give their daughters the Fruit of Immortality when they turn 27 years old and thus make them eternally young and beautiful.
Before we go any further however, we need to know who you are, and whom, if anyone, you have to succeed you in your new task...

You are an adventurer, with longstanding obligations to the Adventurer's Guild of the Queensland of Lore. You are being asked to enter the Labyrinth of Ambuscade, a deadly dungeon from which few return, but those who do come back rich beyond the dreams of kings. Your family has been given exclusive rights to this treasure trove, but it is perilous beyond reckoning, so exploiting it will be the work of generations. Sire or bear children during the downtime segments between 'adventures' to continue the story when your current character dies and invest the gold and gems you bring back in expanding your family's castle built atop the entrance to the Labyrinth to give those children training which gives them the best chances to succeed where 'you' failed. You start out by picking a character from the top list to begin the game as, each time your character 'dies': or at least doesn't come back for about 20 years, there ARE conditions in the story where the current heir can run into and rescue their distant/not-so-distant ancestor(s): their son or daughter starts a new delve into the Labyrinth of Ambuscade, perhaps ending up dead as well or perhaps at last reaching the fabled Glade of the Gloaming where grows the Tree of Immortality whose magical fruit grants eternal life to those who eat it. Not all characters are created equal, in some respects: Female characters, due to the difficulty and risks of having children in those cases and the shier deadliness of the dungeon, start with three daughters to carry on after them, males by contrast do not start with any heirs, they have to create them the old fashioned way. (Inspired by other stories on this site, the Pathfinder Role Playing Game System and the video-game Rogue Legacy.)
