You WERE going to, but....

As the final bell rings, you pack your things up as slowly as possible, dreading the idea of spending any more time at school, especially on a Friday, and especially under the watch of the bitingly apathetic Ms. Beltoy. Making your way through the halls, lagging behind the rest of the bus-bound crowd, you're about to turn the corner to your detention destination when you see Chris there, leaning against the wall and peeking past the lockers. She turns as she hears you approach, and while she smiles, she also holds an arm out to keep you from moving forward.

"Hey, Sam," she says, "were you actually going to go to detention?"

"Well...." you search for words, not wanting to seem like the sort of uncool person who did what teachers told them. Was going to detention uncool? It probably wasn't cool in and of itself, but was it actually something a lot of people could get out of? "I mean, I wouldn't, but, she'd probably give, like, double-detention once we got back on Monday, so..."

"Yeah...." Chris sighed, leaning back against the lockers, "but it sucks though, with today's practice cancelled, I was going to get a Friday afternoon off for once."

"Yeah," you repeat, "it sucks. I mean, I guess we could just.... not go?" The two of you stand there for a moment, letting that sentiment hang in the air, neither one of you really wanting to commit until the other does first, until Chris finally speaks up.

"Well," she says, taking another peek around the corner, and you follow; the door to Ms. Beltoy's room is open, but there's no sign of her from where you two are standing, "my cars waiting in the parking lot. What do you say we just take it on the chin on Monday?" she looks back at you, smirking, and you feel your heart skip a beat.

"You know what, yeah!" you say after a moment, a little ahead of yourself, "let's get out of here!"
