Chapter 14 by Zeebop Zeebop

What Do The Duo Do?

Go To The Lesbian Pit

Lois Lane followed Angelica Blaze through the club, to a set of fire stairs. They descended into darkness...and then at the bottom of the stairwell, Blaze moved a piece of sheet metal away from where it leaned against the wall to reveal an opening. Someone had busted through the cinderblock, tunneling through to a more natural space in the living rock beyond it.

"It is said that there are invisible currents that criss-cross this world," Blaze's voice was barely a whisper, and she grabbed the reporter's wrist to guide her through the dark tunnel. It smelled of dry earth and...something else, some unmistakable feminine odor, like the changing room at a gym.

"They form a geomantic web. Where the lines cross they form a nexus, a place of power...and strange chemicals can bubble up from deep beneath the Earth. They say that those who enter these strange pits are forever changed..."

"Lazarus pits," Lois breathed, remembering the stories of Ra's al-Ghul, the immortal criminal. There was an eerie light ahead, strangely...pink.

"No. Lesbian pits." Angelica gave her hand a squeeze. "The first of them is said to have been discovered on the isle of Lesbos by the great poet Sappho; she bathed in it and was reborn in a form that allowed her to be with her lover Bilitis. Other such pools come in and out of the histories, and always the women that enter them...change."

They emerged into a kind of natural cavern. The floor sloped downwards to the center of the room, where lay an apparently natural pool of bubbling pink goo. It glowed and moved thickly like liquid magma, but the reporter could feel no heat emanate from it. Instead, the smell was almost overpowering...and...enticing...

The light of the pool illuminated the cavern well enough, and as her eyes adjusted Lois saw scrawled words and figures on nearly every surface.

"It's common for the women that use this pool to inscribe their names or some message on the walls," Blaze told her. "If your women did come down here and bathed in the pool...they might be unrecognizable. But we might find a clue as to where to find them among the inscriptions. Let's look!"

Do They Find A Clue? Or Does Lois Fall In?
