Chapter 7 by android1966 android1966

Do you all survive the water?

Surprisingly, yes.

You have no real idea how long or how far you are swept along down the swollen stream. The water churning all around you and the pitch dark when you manage to get your head above water makes an estimate of either impossible. You grip the pump action shotgun tightly though, the first thing you learned in the corps was never lose your weapon.

After what seems like an eternity you feel a hand grasp your arm, spluttering and gasping for breath you **** your head above the surface and see Julia waist deep in the water with Toni and Tamara holding onto her to stop her being swept away. The combined efforts of the three escaped prisoners manages to haul you to the bank and you flop down onto the ground beside Rihanna who is retching violently and coughing up dirty water.

"Thanks guys." You gasp. "I owe you bitches one for that."

"You better watch who you call a bitch you dumb cracker or I'll toss your ass back." Julia snarls. "I ain't no-ones bitch."

"Fuck! Don't you ever chill out." Toni says to the black convict. "I'm surprised we all survived that shit. We gotta work together if we're gonna get outta this."

"So what do we do now?" Tamara asks. "We're soaked, freezing and in the middle of nowhere with nothing to wear except prison orange and every law enforcement officer in the country is probably out after us."

"Not in this storm they ain't." You tell her. "They'll set up roadblocks, but choppers won't fly in this and they won't come after us on foot until this clears either. We have an opportunity to put some distance between us and the crash before this blows over."

"Good, so we got a plan. Part of one at least." Toni says. "We press on as far as we can while this storm keeps up. Once it is light and the weather clears up we find some place to hole up. There must be farms or something out here, somewhere we can boost some wheels and maybe get a change of clothes and some food."

For the rest of the night you all try your best to follow this course of action. You know that progress is pretty slow, the area is heavily wooded and the ground is soaked. None of you has a watch, but you guess that you press on for about six hours. You doubt if you manage fifteen miles in that time. The sky starts to lighten with the dawn and the storm is noticably lessening when you stumble out of the woods onto a rough dirt road.

"This has to lead somewhere." You say, doubled over and panting hard with exhaustion. "A farm or a cabin maybe. We should follow the track."

The others are as beat as you are. It's obvious to everyone that if you remain outside much longer then you'll start dropping from hypothermia. You set off along the track and about another hour goes past until you see any sign of habitation. A set of gates are by the side of the dirt road with a drive leading into the woods and keep out signs posted. You climb over the gate and head up the drive. It is getting lighter and raining less and less as time goes on.

"Okay, Me and Rihanna will scout ahead and see if it looks like anyone is home." You tell the girls.

"Why you and her?" Julia asks with a scowl at the pakistani. "She ain't done nothing but whine and hold us back."

"Cause me and her are the only ones with military training." You snap back. "You and Toni might be tough and good in a fight, but Rihanna and me both saw action in Iraq."

"Yeah, on different sides." Toni laughs. "How you sure she ain't going to go all jihad on your ass. You probably wasted some of her islamic buddies."

"And she probably killed some of mine too." You reply. "I just got to hope she's smart enough to realise that she won't make it on her own. Besides, I'm the one with the shotgun."

"I'll go with you." Rihanna speaks at last. "Once we get to a town or city then I go my own way. Until then we are allies."

What is up the track?
