Chapter 9 by Dark_Ness Dark_Ness

Lunch begins

Lunch and questions

You all sit at the table to have lunch. The entire time, you're shocked at how luxurious everything is. Even your meal is fairly high class. Salads and chicken parmesan. You wondered if Paul had cleared the meal with his family beforehand, or if they just didn't care what you liked. Either seemed likely.

"So, Erin, what is it you're attending school for?" Marcia asked.

"Education, with a minor in music. I wanted to be a musician, but figured being a teacher made more sense." you say.

"A teach, hm?" Marcia asked. Something shifted a bit on her face. Did you say something wrong? "I can appreciate following the path of an educator. I considered it myself, in my youth. Ultimately, though, I decided upon law. I assume you'll graduate in 2 years?"

"Oh, no. I'm graduating next year," you say. Once the words leave your mouth, you realize your mistake. Erin is supposed to be a year younger than Paul. "I'm, uh, on the fast track. Extra classes in my first few years to get my Master's earlier."

"Very noble." David said. "And an excellent work ethic."

"Yeah, Erin's really driven." Paul says. His hand moves to your leg and squeezes it, and you have to fight the urge to push him away.

"You're interested in music as well?" Bill asked.

"Been playing piano since I was little." you say. You can't help but feel that this is more an interrogation than a lunch. "My parents insisted on it, and I liked it well enough to stick with it."

"A woman of culture, huh? I never would have thought you'd land one of them, bro." Cindy said.

"Well, clearly I have good taste." Paul said.

We continued to eat, with the occasional question lobbed my way. As it continued, I could see Marcia warming a bit to me. Toward the end, she spoke up again.

"We really should wrap up. We have a lot to do this afternoon. Still, I would like to get to know Erin some more. Perhaps she could join us?"

You look at Paul, and you can tell by the look in his eyes what he wants you to say.

"Sounds great."
