It wasn't until after dark that you got home. Grabbing some leftovers you muttered some excuse about working to your parents and then rushed up to your room and shut the door. You pulled the pharmacy bag out of your pocket and tossed it onto the bed and paced back and forth. You felt sick.

All the money you had earned over the month was now gone, you couldn't even buy a coffee with what remained in your wallet and it was all because of what was inside the bag you had stuffed in your pocket as you walked up to your front door. All your hard work fit into a box roughly the size of a deck of cards. You wanted to hurl.

"Linus?"

Yanking the door open, you grab Mira's hand and pull her into your room.

"Linus? What the hell?"

You don't look at Mira and just stare at the bag. It's the only thing of note in your room,Maddie from the computer on your desk which had been gathering dust.

"Is that what I think it is?"

You don't trust yourself to open your mouth. You shake your head.

"No? I told you Linus, I'm not interested in you as—"

"Just look at it, will you?" you blurt out.

Mira rolls hers eyes and walks over to your bed. You stand rooted in your spot by the door as your stepsister grabs the bag, noisly uncrumples it and sticks her hand in.

"You're shitting me."

You shake your head again.

"You can't be serious. You didn't—you just got an empty box."

"An empty, unopened box?"

"Jesus fucking Christ Linus, I didn't think—"

"I had to!" You start pacing across the room again. "I was there, and I had to. Trust me, I thought about it, for hours. They almost threw me out of the store. I just couldn't buy the other ones though."

"But what about—"

"I don't care." You stop pacing.

"You have to care. I live here. You live here. You don't have anywhere to go."

"I'll find a place if it comes to that."

"No," Mira shakes her head, and clutches the box in her hand. "I don't accept that. You can't. I won't let you. You're my little brother—"

Silence falls over the two of you. Mira's eyes are red and watery. You don't know how you look to Mira, determined you hope, but on the inside you feel like your guts are writhing around in your stomach, tying themselves into knots. Her voice wavers when she speaks.

Your feet feel like they're stuck in the mud, but you take a step forward anyway. Mira barely tries to keep it out of your reach but you grab the box, open it, and let the single pink pill with a small plus sign on the side fall into your hand. Another moment's hesitation and you might back out, so you toss the pill into your throat and swallow.
