Chapter 20

Can you really say no?

Sure, whatever

You reply nonchalantly and a second later Abby is back to texting before setting the phone down and picking up a controller. She starts up the console and picks out a game, and pretty soon you two are barking orders back and forth at each other as tiny animated chefs zip around the screen struggling to chop veggies and cook meat before time runs out.

Sitting on the floor of Abby's room, focused intently on the on-screen action, all your larger concerns melt away and you feel about 5 years younger. Despite barely having talked to Abby in the few hours since you met her, you feel like friends already. After all she's been exceedingly hospitable to you, inviting you into her room and hanging with you one-on-one rather than finding a way to get rid of you.

Nothing breaks your or Abby's focus on the game until her bedroom door swings open to reveal a guy around your age (18 or older, that is). Using your vast powers of deduction, you figure he must be Abby's boyfriend. He's a pretty average looking guy, you guess. Maybe six feet tall, slightly muscular, but he's no male model.

Luckily you have never seen the guy before, so there's seemingly no risk of somehow outing yourself based on an offhand comment.

Abby introduces the two of you, his name is Chris. Chris takes a seat on the bed behind you and Abby, his legs dangling over the edge. Abby reaches forward to grab a third controller from beside the TV before leaning back against his shins.

As she scrolls through her game library looking for something new to play, something less intense perhaps, she begins telling you about Chris, and she tells Chris what little she knows about you. Mainly that you were new to the area and were about to be a freshman at the local university (ECU, that is).

Soon the three of you find yourselves at ease, conversing freely about all kinds of things, games, music, recommendations for restaurants and shopping, University life, etc. You do your best to maintain your 'cover' when it comes to certain topics like you not knowing the area, but when it comes to your interests and facts about your past, you speak freely and honestly.

Eventually Abby manages to turn the topic of conversation to your 'love life', whether you were dating anybody, were you straight or gay, etc. You tell Abby (and Chris too, I suppose) that you weren't dating anybody and hadn't ever dated a boy, but when she follows up with a "So are you gay?" you say "No!" without thinking twice. Of course, being in a female body, you very well might be "gay", but you hadn't really thought of it, and were certainly no expert on human sexuality.

You're saved by the bell just a minute or two later when Abby's mom Caroline yells that your mom is here to pick you up. You say a quick goodbye to Abby and Chris, but Abby insists on a hug before she lets you go. She also makes you put your number in her phone and says that you better reply when she texts you in the morning.

You say thank you to Caroline for having you in her home before you lead your mother out of the house into the cool evening air, wearing just your swimsuit and jean shorts.

Does Abby want to see you again?
