Chapter 20

How does the coup d'état go?
Smoothly, with some complications
The coup d'teat happened very smoothly and swiftly, such that by the time anyone took notice, they were too late to act.
With your troops moving into the capital city, the city guard there had no time to react, slain on the spot and proving little match for your veteran troops. In fact, it went so well, within an hour the entire Royal Palace in Denerim was completely subdubed and the servants left helpless.
But an unexpected situation had developed in the throne room. Namely, the **** of King Alistair and the wounding of Queen Anora at the hands of a mysterious assailant.
And it was none other than a Venatori agent responsible - said main promptly slain.
And yet, it was at that moment that riots broke out within Denerim, the civilians armed with torches, pitchforks and any other manner of weaponry at their disposal. Predictably, the Chantry Mothers and other clerics within the city were slain to the last, and the rioters targeted the Elven Alienage, blankly chanting Corypheus's name like a holy mantra.
The City Elves were safe, protected by your troops who slew the crazed rioters to the last, but it did not stop there.
Throughout Ferelden, countless lords and ladies were slain by those they thought they trusted, the rest declaring open revolt against the Crown and the Inquisition. The Elves were adequately protected, thanks to your placement of troops and agents beforehand, but the resulting chaos caused many deaths among the peasantry caught in the middle, and without the ruling King and many of its nobility dead, if no one took control, Ferelden would descend into anarchy and other powers - like Orlais - would want to pounce on its weakened remnants in spite of the Venatori threat.
Such was politics.
And now, as the only faction left in the area with enough power to restore law and order, and with Queen Anora temporarily **** from blood loss, there really was only one way to go forward.
It was before a confused and beleaguered audience of Fereldeners that you stood, dressed in the most resplendent dress uniform and armed with your personal sword.
With a loud and clear voice, you then shouted, "People of Ferelden, I am Alaras Surana, Hero of Ferelden!"
Your name and title send a shockwave of whispers through the audience, before you silence them.
"People of Ferelden, I am sad to say that King Alistair is dead, and Queen Anora grievously wounded," You continued, "We have confirmed the involvement of Venatori agents within the Palace, and in instigating the widespread chaos that nearly consumed Ferelden in flames. Because of them, the government is now useless, and most of the ruling nobility is dead! Tell me, who do you have to turn to? Who has the power to protect you from the Venatori and those other nations who'd sooner conquer you than leave you be!?"
Not that you actually cared for King Alistair; he'd effectively severed ties with you for sparing Loghain on account of his contributions to Ferelden and conscripting him into the Grey Wardens.
When you left Amaranthine for personal reasons, he was in charge of the place in your stead, his talents put to good use protecting the people and rebuilding the Fereldener branch of the Grey Wardens, allowing you to steadily grow their numbers over the decade since the Fifth Blight.
Making him your de facto second-in-command.
And now, that imbecile must be ruing the day he severed ties with you.
Poor Alistair, hating Loghain simply because he took King Cailan from this world... You thought, Though I did not approve of Loghain's actions following the failed defense at Ostagar, Cailan wasn't the King that Ferelden needed. True, we cannot rely solely on ourselves to survive in this world. Yes, we need to bury grudges with our former enemies, but he was in essence a gloryhound with no real talent to his name. Bryce Cousland was the better candidate. And I don't think Celene truly intended to follow through with the alliance either, from my point of view.
You breathed a heavy sigh.
And I feel bad for Anora, who's had to contend with Alistair's catering to the Chantry when clearly, they are nothing more than Orlais's puppet, You thought, They may hold influence throughout the continent, and it is true they cannot be easily offended due to their involvement in the continent's politics, but their time is long past. If we have to tolerate this puppet any longer, I daresay I'd rather be languishing eternal torment in the Fade than temporary torment at one of their trials.
"Y-You're our King!"
The audience turned to face a single man, lonely and timid.
"Why do you believe that?" You asked.
"B-Because you protected us from the Venatori!" He said, "Not the Chantry, not King Alistair, but you and the Inquisition! Who else could it be!?"
And soon, a growing cacophony of voices began to chant this single line:
"Long live Alaras! Long live the King!"
You hold up a fist for silence, and you question the people, "Do you think me your King?"
"You are our King! Our only King!" They repeated.
"Thank you all!" You shouted, "I have heard all of you! And therefore, I hereby take up the mantle of King at your request! May Ferelden long prosper beyond my days!"
"Long live the King! Long live the King!" The people chanted.
And you smiled at this.
What of Queen Anora?
