Chapter 6 by VagueJester VagueJester

What do you do?

Make Preparations

You've just been granted a golden opportunity, and there's no way you're about to waste it. Looking around the small, roughly-carved, cobweb-filled room, your first instinct is to leave and explore the world beyond the dungeon you've called home for your entire existence. You disregard that idea however, as your new intelligence grants you an automatic understanding of certain aspects of the world at large; particularly the fact that you are only level 11 at the moment, and the highest level that heroes can currently reach is 185 - more than fifteen times your current strength - and that's not counting other NPCs, considering you've heard talk of raids involving several of those nigh-demigods to accomplish.

On top of all that, you're a being of shadows, meaning you work best in low light. No, the best path to take is to stay here. Heroes will come to you with increasingly higher levels of power, providing you with a constant source of experience. Besides, you did notice that the tunnels don't just stop at your little room, which lends some credence to those rumors saying these caves span the entirety of the continent.

With your mind made up, you start to think about how you will make the most of your current situation. Looking around, your gaze travels from the crafting table at one end of the room to the various detritus sitting around the room, and you start to understand the meaning behind this particular gift left to you by your crystalline benefactor. It becomes even clearer when, after having collected the the cobwebs from every corner of the room and making your way over to the crafting table, you hear a chime and turn around to find that the first bunch of webbing you harvested has returned.

Of course! You cheer internally as it dawns on you that, so long as there aren't any heroes around, monsters and materials that can be harvested will constantly respawn. Setting the webbing down on the table, you turn to your door fire a bolt of darkness at it, blasting it off its hinges. You cross the room and pick up the remains of the door, which has been smashed into pieces, and bring them over to your crafting table before turning to the now-empty doorway and waiting. Minutes pass, and the first inklings of regret start to creep up your spine as you may have just destroy the only defense - paltry though it may have been - against the incessant stream of heroes that will be scrambling over one another in order to kill you.

While you wait, you decide to peruse the bag of the warrior you killed, and the moment you touch it, it vanishes, while a menu appears before your eyes telling you that you have gained thirty-two gold pieces and an empty bottle, followed by another menu saying you have absorbed 17/20 Shadow Essences. You wonder what that could mean, but are unwilling to go about slaying your former kin just to find out. That would make you no better than the heroes who did the same to you.

Finally, after about thirty minutes, the door returns in its original state, just in time for you to hear the familiar fanfare signifying heroes having entered your dungeon. You know you don't have long before you're about to be attacked, so you turn to the crafting table and begin working fervently to create something that can help you. The first thing you do is turn the bundles of cobwebs into strings, which you combine with some of the wood from your destroyed door to create a tripwire. A menu shows up, asking if you would like to automatically equip it to your room, and you select yes. With that done, you use your remaining string and make a rope, before combining it with your leftover wood to create a log trap which you select to automatically be equipped to your tripwire. Your preparations finished, you turn to the door and begin waiting nervously for your approaching attackers. After about ten minutes of waiting, you hear the sound of voices and heavy footsteps approaching, and hide yourself in the shadows as the door creaks open, hoping that your preparations have paid off. Fighting a party is not going to be nearly as easy as the grand total of three encounters you've had so far.

Do your traps work?
