Make a deal

Very well, you say, I will help you capture some heroes to use for breeding. However, I propose a more equitable arrangement. "Indeed," the lead spiders replies, "What would you suggest?" Simple, we work together, setting a trap on the path. We split the heroes between us, 60-40. The lead spider makes a chittering sound, which you realize a moment later is supposed to be laughter, "60-40? How about 40-60?" You're the ones asking me for help, not the other way round. You respond scornfully. "Yes, but there are more of us and only one of you," the spider responds. Fine, you give a little sigh, 50-50, agreed?" You'd figured that it was going to end up like that, but had thought you might as well push your luck. The spider stares at you for a moment and then replies, "Agreed. We shall gather the rest of our brethren. Meet us by the path to arrange our ambush."

You watch the spiders scurry away. Part of you is concerned about the deal you just made. You don't trust those little bastards farther that you can throw them. Actually, now that you think about it, you trust them a hell of lot less than you can throw them. You're going to have to be careful. You're pretty sure their leader would have no compunctions about stabbing you in the back. Still, one of them seemed like he wanted to start worshiping you, or, at least, serve you in some way. That might be useful if there were more like him.

You're thoughts are disturbed by Dana stirring in your coils. You realize you should probably start getting ready. You feel a flicker of concern at the thought of bringing Dana with you. You have not the forgotten that the spiders expressed an interest in using her as breeding stock, and it occurs to you that she might be injured in any fighting that takes place. Of course, you could drop her off back at your Lair but, she might take the opportunity to run away.
