Chapter 11 by ThomasMoro ThomasMoro

Does Demeter help Diana?

Not really

"Oh, Mom," said Persephone as she rushed to the entrance to the Underworld and opened the gate, "I'm so glad to see you."

"And I'm so glad to see you, Persephone," said the tall, well-dressed woman on the other side of the gate.

"I have a question for you," said Persephone.

"And I have a question for you," said the tall woman. "Why aren't you packed?"

"What?" asked Persephone.

"For your yearly visit to the Overworld," said the woman Persephone called Mom. "That's been the arrangement we've had ever since you married Hades."

"I'm sorry, Mom," said Persephone. "I forgot."

"You forgot?" asked Demeter. "It seems like you always forget."

"Well, there was a lot to do and -- "

"We had the same problem last year," said Demeter. "And the year before that. In fact, we've had this same problem for centuries. You always forget, no matter how many reminders I send you."

"Well, I said I was sorry," said Persephone.

She turned to her handmaidens and told them to leave the statue and start packing up her clothes for a trip. They immediately did so, not wanting to risk the wrath of either Persephone or her much taller mother.

"While we're waiting, I don't suppose you could do something about this statue?" said Persephone, pointing to Diana. "You see, there was a gorgon and -- "

"Oh, really, Persephone," said Demeter. "First you make me wait, then you ask me for favors?"

"Well, one favor, actually," said Demeter.

"Well, whatever it is can wait six months until the time your yearly visit with me is up," said Demeter. "Then I'll be happy to come back here and do anything you want."

Six months! thought Diana. I gotta stay this way for six months?

"Hey, can't you do it now?" asked Persephone.

"Hey, consider yourself lucky I'm not making you wait nine months like I used to do in the old days," said Demeter. "By the way, I see the handmaidens are back with your clothes. Now you have no more excuses."

"Oh, well," said Persephone.

Persephone turned toward Diana's statue and said, "Farewell, Diana. It's been nice knowing you. I know I'm leaving you in an uncomfortable situation but I'm sure a brave Amazon warrior like you can tough it out till I get back."

"Wait a minute, Persephone," said Demeter. "Are you saying that statue is really an Amazon warrior and that one of your gorgons turned her to stone?"

"Yes, Mom," said Persephone. "I am."

"In that case, I really do need to change her back," said Demeter. "But not right now. I'll do it as soon as I can six months from now. Now let's go."

And just like that, Diana watched helplessly as the two goddesses and the clothes-bearing handmaidens walked out the gate of the Underworld without as much as a glance backwards.

The only living creature left by the gate apart from Diana was Persephone's pet dog Cerebus whose chain was just long enough to allow it to walk up to Diana and lick her face. Then it turned away and started to lift one of its hind legs in Diana's direction.

Oh, no, thought Diana.

But unfortunately, her thought had no influence on the dog's behavior and did not do one thing to prevent Cerebus from giving Diana yet one more reason to be embarrassed.

It looks like it's going to be a long six months, thought Diana.

The end?
