Chapter 19 by simmaster simmaster

Should you go with that plan, or keep thinking?

No plan, attack!

Wait a minute... You can't be attacked by heroes in human form! During the day you still count as a friendly NPC.

Remembering this, you get up to your feet, draw your dagger and run towards the two intruders with an... adequate, battlecry. As you get closer to your targets you can see them better in the darkness, and you see that one of them is wearing some rather decent-looking leather armor and wielding a bow, and the other one is equipped with a pretty scary-looking scaled armor with a helmet that covers his face with an almost sleek visor, save for a few tiny holes for eyesight and breathing. He's also carrying a two-handed silver sword, and that's enough for you to decide you should attack him first. Silver weapons have a huge bonus against werewolves like you, so you want him dead before sun set and you can take damage again.

The heroes rather quickly figure out the situation enough to act, and the one holding the sword swings said sword at you, causing it to harmlessly pass through you as you stab him in the shoulder, and your dagger passed through it in a much less harmless way.

"What the hell...?! I can't target him!" the swordsman yells, and you hear the other hero switch from whatever weapon he was holding to something more optimal for close combat, but his attempts to attack you are as futile.

You continue your **** on the swordsman and he makes rather poor attempts to defend himself, seemingly dumbstruck by the situation. You hear that the wolves must have woken up from the commotion, growls and barks coming from somewhere behind you and fast approaching.

"Maybe it's some resistance thing?" the second hero suggests. "Like, we need a weapon of a certain type to hurt him?"

"That's not how it works, you idiot!" the swordsman replies. "He can't even be targeted properly! It's as if you're not supposed to be able to initiate combat with him!"

"Okay, in that case I'm out of here," the second hero said and turned to run. "There's some glitch going on here or some shit like that."

Before he can even attempt to run, the wolves attack him from behind. He falls to the ground with one of them on top of him and the others around, biting and clawing at him.

The swordsman sees his companion's troublesome position and attempts to swing his sword at one of the wolves, but you grab it by the blade with your bare hand. Taking no damage whatsoever. DAMN did that feel good.

The swordman's health were almost at half after your many stabs, indicating that your attack is either really weak or he has pretty strong armor and/or lots of health. But you continue as you hold his sword, preventing him from using it. That is, for about two seconds until he rips it out of your grip with ease. Okay, he's certainly a lot stronger than you...

One of the wolves that for whatever reason didn't feel like targeting the other hero jumps at the swordsman, and you deflect his attempt to impale the wolf on his sword. The wolf knocks him over and starts tearing at his armor, and you help it. A quick glance at the other hero ensures you that he's not getting back up. He is clearly less experienced than the one you're dealing with and can't struggle against the wolves enough to fight back.

The swordsman attempts to fight off the werewolf with his sword, and you grab it with both hands hoping to at least keep him from using it for a few more seconds. And then you feel it. It's nighttime, and the beast awakens.

You start to turn, and as you do you feel your grip around the sword get stronger. And more painful. Once the transformation is complete, you're taking continuous damage from holding the sword by the blade, but you're strong enough to pull it out of the swordsman's grip. You got a feeling he's technically strong enough to struggle against you even in this form, but he's clearly thrown off by the sudden change in your strength.

You toss the sword away and begin to savagely attack the swordsman, but just when you think he's done for he delivers a strong kick to your stomach, knocking you off him. He slams the wolf with his entire lower arm, knocking it off as well, and then he quickly gets up and runs.

You walk over to the other hero, who is almost dead by now, and delivers coup de grace. Wouldn't want to miss out on that XP...

Upon hearing the *Ding* signaling his ****, you run after the swordsman. He's already by the cave exit, but you're a lot faster than him. He doesn't get far outside the cave before you're right behind him, and you pounce. He throws himself to the side to dodge you, but you recover from the missed attack faster than he does from his evasion, and while he's getting back up to his feet you pounce again, this time with greater success. You pin him down, and while his struggles give you quite a challenge, you manage to hold him. You hear the wolves coming out of the cave to join you, and they gladly **** the defenseless swordsman.

As they dig their teeth and claws into his armor and flesh, he reacts in a rather unexpected way. He chuckles at you.

"You're an interesting one," he says. "Attack immunity like a friendly NPC, and yet you're not friendly. I bet the guild are gonna be intrigued to hear this."

Then his health reaches zero and he lets out his final breath... That is, until he draws a new one upon respawning... Fucking heroes, so spoiled with their ability to respawn that they still have time to make half-assed villain speeches when dying...

*Ding*

You stand up and watch your wolves eat the swordsman's corpse, which apparently helps replenishing their health, and take a deep breath. That was more intense than the last few days' battles. And what did that guy mean with "guild"? Actually, it's quite obvious what he means. He's part of a guild that will soon all hear about you and probably wanna come and try to kill you. Maybe it's time to move somewhere else...

Your musings are interrupted by the by now somewhat familiar sensation of growing. It's not as bad this time, either because it's not as big of a growth or because you've got a higher pain threshold now. As soon as it stops, you open your stats to see what kind of changes brought with it that growth boost.

Ability Gained!
Fearsome Roar: Inflicts fear on animals of level 15 and below and humanoids of level 8 and below.

Oh... Wow. You gained quite a lot from killing those two. You're an ALPHA now! ...But wait, aren't you supposed to gain that status around level 20? Maybe it's the lack of other werewolves competing for leadership, or your teamwork with the wolves... Whatever, you're a fucking alpha werewolf now! You can have minions now! MINIONS! ...Sure, only two of them, but it's a start. And excellent start. You also got a pair of active abilities that seem very useful. And your regeneration ability doubled in efficiency. Which still isn't a lot, but again, it's a start.

An excellent start.

Now you need to consider... Staying in the forest is becoming less and less safe. You should probably move somewhere. And put those empty pack slots to good use. Looking at your wolves, your first thought is to recruit two of them. But then the others would be separated from their family... Though right now you have no other candidates for pack members, and you could use all the help you can get.

What do you do?
