Chapter 31 by simmaster simmaster

How, though?

Look for a place to farm... A secluded place.

"Do you have some kind of map on you?" you ask.

"Yeah, but hell if I can figure out how to read it," Ilimia mutters.

"Can I see it?"

"Sure." Ilimia hands you the map, and it seems pretty straightforward. A drawn version of the landscape, with simplistic symbols marking locations of interest.

"How in the world can you have a hard time reading this? It's practically designed for idiots!"

"Just shut up and choose somewhere good to go."

The map doesn't offer any information about the advised level for each area, so you simply choose a bandit camp a reasonable distance away from the town or any other settlement. You're already used to fighting humans and you're not willing to risk fighting something like slimes or spiders that for all you know might be formidable opponents due to your different resistances and combat styles.

"Let's go here," you say and point on the area on the map.

"I still don't know what that means," Ilimia replies crankily. "Just take me there."

You leave town, and when you're a safe distance away you hear familiar barking. Turning around, you see your two wolves coming towards you. They must have seen you come out and understood it's time to regroup. But then Ilimia puts on her helmet and draws her sword. Right, she still sees them as hostile monsters...

"Wait!" you yell. "They're friendly."

"What the fuck are you talking about?" Ilimia replies.

To demonstrate what you mean before she kills your pack, you kneel down to let both wolves run into your arms, licking your face.

"They're my pets," you tell her.

She relaxes a bit and sheathes her sword again, but keeps her helmet on. Such a shame, now you can't see her cute face anymore...

"How the hell does that work? Are you some kind of tamer?" she asks.

"I guess you could say that."

The four of you resume your travel, and even though Ilimia is wearing her helmet you can see her glancing suspiciously at you and your wolves. She probably hasn't killed you just to be safe yet because your level is way too low to intimidate her. That is, your level as a human, which is tracked separately from your level as a werewolf. As a human you're a measly level 4, easily put to **** by a hero of level...?

"What level are you exactly?" you ask, breaking the silence.

Ilimia hesitates a moment, but then replies "Six."

"Huh... So... You're as strong as my wolves?"

Ilimia scowls at you. Well, you still can't see it, but you're pretty sure you feel it. "I'm pretty new to the hero business."

"And you're not worried I'm gonna betray you and have my wolves eat you?"

"Of course not, moron. A monster the same level as a hero is still an easy kill for the hero."

That was of course true... You had seen it many times before in Torgniam. Though you had also seen some examples of stronger heroes fall to your wolves, but then you had been interfering.

The rest of the travel is done in silence, except for a few bored groans from Ilimia, and when you finally reach the bandit camp it's almost sunset. This would be... interesting.

The bandit camp is built in a small valley in a rocky field with a few cliffs around it, and consists of a wall of sharpened logs enveloping a few tents, campfires and huts. And chests, of course. Presumably containing some mediocre loot.

This looks like a good time to equip the rest of the things you took from the guard, and you put on his armor and equip his spear and shield. As expected, the equipment's quality is pretty poor, but better than your clothes and dagger. Ilimia also quickly recognizes your attire.

"...Wait, you were a guard in that town?" she asks.

"It really doesn't matter, what matters is that camp over there," you respond. "Do you like it? Wanna go raid it?"

"...Yeah, why not." It sounds like it's boredom speaking, understandable after walking for so long. You had spent your entire life in Torgniam, so simply being on the move was thrilling to you. But heroes saw new places all the time, so getting from one to the next must be quite boring to them.

Your plan is to sneak inside camp and investigate it unseen to get a better idea of how to easily kill anyone inside and take their loot. Imilia's plan, which she puts into action before you can stop her, is to walk straight to the half-assed gate of the wooden wall and kick it in. Well... That works too. Hopefully.

How well does it work?
