Chapter 32 by simmaster simmaster

How well does it work?

Good, at first.

Since it's too late to back out now, you follow your teammate as your two wolves follow you. You see four bandits coming towards you with melee weapons and three staying back with bows. Well, this is an excellent start... Is this how heroes do things? Or is this how noobs get themselves killed?

You have no time to reconsider making an agreement with this girl as an arrow flies towards you, and you manage to raise your shield just in time to block it.

"Stay behind me!" Ilimia tells you. "I'm the tank. I take all the hits while you hit back. Clear?"

"Very clear," you say and slip behind your heavily armored companion, telling your wolves to do the same.

As the four melee bandits come within Ilimia's range, she tries to attack them all at once to keep them focused on her. You send your wolves on them and attack them with your spear, dodging arrows as they fly towards their intended target, Ilimia. Well, at least she's doing a good job with being a tank...

"Go get the archers!" she orders you. "I can handle these guys."

You obey, ignoring the part of you that despises the idea of complying to a hero's orders, and redirect your wolves' attention to two of the archers while rushing the third yourself. Unfortunately you fail to block the arrow he fires at you, and as it pierces into your shoulder you are made acutely aware of your low level in human form as your health drops with a scary amount.

Just as you're about to ask yourself if coming here was biting off more than you could chew, the sun sets and you transform. And as your senses sharpen, you can with relative ease separate the noise of battle from Ilimia's surprised gasp. Yeah, you probably have some explaining to do once this is over, but it's not over yet.

You run towards the archer at much greater speed than before, digging your teeth and claws into him before he can fire another arrow. He dies rather quickly, and you feel a small rush of XP. Too small. Apparently killing heroes is a lot more profitable after all... Or maybe you're just not getting as much since you're sharing it with Ilimia?

You help your wolves kill the other two bandits, feeling an XP bonus being added to the pack to be distributed by you later, and then you return the attention to the four remaining ones that have managed to overpower Ilimia. Her health is dropping quickly and she's not doing a good job fighting back.

You run over to her and deal with the bandits, crushing a few skulls and bones. It feels so satisfying to be this strong... The final one you grab by his leg and swing him up into the air before slamming him into the ground, killing him while also fueling your ego.

The battle is won. And unfortunately it offered very little XP. You might have to rethink your strategy... But for now you should concern yourself with Ilimia. You turn around to face her, narrowly dodging her sword as she swings it at you.

"I should have known, I should have FUCKING known!" she yells. "I'm gonna fuck you up so fucking hard this time!"

You're almost amused. You defeated her as a young werewolf, and now you're an alpha. She doesn't stand a chance.

You grab her by the arm holding her sword and wrap your other paw around her neck. You're too strong for her to resist, but she keeps struggling anyway. If only you could communicate with her in your werewolf form... Your wolves growl at her for attempting to attack you, and you have to order them to stand back so they won't kill her. When you hear them growling again you're just about to get a little mad at them for not listening, until turning your head and realizing they're not growling at her. They're growling at the party of five that just entered the camp.

Well, shit.

You spy two warriors, one healer, one archer and one rogue. At least they don't have a mage to cast fire spells at you... They do seem quite well-equipped though, probably higher-level players just passing through a low-level zone on their way to something bigger...

"Um, what the hell is going on here?" one of the warriors ask.

"Looks like a werewolf. And someone in trouble," the archer replies.

"Fuck off!" Ilimia shouts. "I'm not gonna be some fucking damsel in distress! I can handle this!"

You need to consider your chances... Maybe you could run away. Hopefully the archer wouldn't be able to kill you before you were out of range, and they wouldn't be able to catch up with you. Or maybe you could attempt to stay and fight...

Run or fight?
