Level Two

Diana found nothing out of the ordinary on Level One -- just a lot of labs and offices. It was not until she got back to the elevator that she found out that she was not allowed to wear her jacket on any of the other floors. However, they did promise to give it back to her when she was ready to leave the building.

At the next level, she was required to give up her blouse. Granted, she still had a bra on underneath but the surrender of such an important clothing item made her feel uncomfortable. Yet the guard refused to let her get off the elevator until she did so and of course, once she took it off, she was not allowed to have it back in her possession until the end of her visit.

"You know some people would consider this sexual harassment," said Diana.

"Why?" said the guard. "We're not asking you to do anything sexual. Just give up an item of clothing that our environmental control system has rendered unnecessary. Plus the same rule is upheld regarding men's shirts. So you can't make a claim of sex discrimination."

Diana suspected there was something faulty about that logic but she could not say just what it was. So she gave up the blouse and went about the investigation.

At the next level, she was asked to give up her skirt.

"Seriously?"

"Quite serious," said the guard. And as she spoke to Diana, a lady in a white lab coat -- and wearing nothing beneath that lab coat save a bra and panties -- walked down the hall behind the guard and entered another door.

"I could report this to one of the other government agencies," she said.

"Go ahead and try," said the guard. "Others have tried and so far every case against this company has been thrown out of court. Besides, it's not as if this company is engaged in any illegal activity."

"We'll see about that," said Diana as she unzipped her skirt.
