Chapter 9 by CrusaderofTruth CrusaderofTruth

Fight or Flight?

Fight!

Steely resolve to at least get one more batch of XP fills you, along with a minor unwillingness to simply abandon your home. True enough, that same rogue enters draw distance with a pair of other heroes, walking with purpose towards your den. Getting a good look at them, you see the original rogue was a human, blonde and somehow reminding you of a rat, knives dangling on his waist. The second hero was another rogue, a female judging by her chest and slender frame, an elf with black hair, a bow slung over her shoulder, who didn't look any more impressive than the other rogue. The last hero made your heart skip a beat, however, as he was a powerfully built human fighter, judging by the shield he carries, and the very large sword. By his adornments, the shining quality of his armor, you judge him to be a very high level hero.

Ariadne, fucking, damn it.

Well, not one to simply lie down and die, (not anymore), you prepare to fire your new traps from the ceiling, and wait for them to wander into range. The rogues were clearly arguing again, and the fighter was just laughing, clearly at the male rogues expense. You briefly catch something about this being "so ridiculous, he had to see if it was true". They reach your den, and the first rogue sneaks to the edge of the tunnel, and quickly waves a hand in front of the entrance before pulling it back. Then he throws a rock inside, and ducks out of view. How dumb do they think you are?

He chuckles nervously, then leans in, torch in hand to get a better view, stepping squarely into the entrance of the tunnel, with the other rogue glaring at him openly. With at least one target in prime position, you trigger the first trap, slashing through a thick cord of webbing securing a small boulder to the ceiling. With a nearly imperceptible whistling noise, the boulder tumbles through the air, slamming into the ground with a much more noticeable crashing sound.

*ding*

Startled, the other rogue stumbles back, having barely been missed by the boulder, and you quickly slash another few cords, launching much smaller rocks in a similar design to the first trap you created, albeit at a more accurate trajectory with a bit more ****. Sailing through the air, these rocks mostly miss, but one strikes true, smashing into the female rogues torso, causing her to sputter and gasp, and then crumple to the ground.

*ding*

The pleasant sound of levels does little to quell the terror you feel upon seeing the fighter raise his shield to block the rocks which spang off harmlessly. He lowers his shield and that bastard grins at you. You rapidly begin to cut every line in reach, and another dozen rocks sail towards him, and others not even close to him, but damnit, you don't have anything else. They too spang off of his shield, although you note that he flinches when one of the rocks collides with one of his legs. After the small barrage has finished, he lowers his shield and simply nods, hefts the female rogues corpse over his shoulder, and begin to walk off. Does he... not have any ranged attacks?

He leaves. And you wait for a moment for him to charge back in and somehow kill you without effort. Minutes pass, and it finally dawns on you that you just might not die today. Elation sweeps over you, and you pull up the statistics menu.

Which Talent do you take?
