Chapter 8 by CrusaderofTruth CrusaderofTruth

But now... what to fabricate next?

Defenses.

Indeed, heroes were easily startled, but they'll soon be back, and in greater numbers. The idea of anything out of the ordinary happening drew heroes of all levels and classes like nothing else. It explained why events were so popular.

You considered your good fortune for a brief moment. Clearly, that rogue you had just killed was higher than the baser levels to send you shooting all the way to level 8, but you had no way of being sure how high level he was, or even how much damage you did with your trap. You would need to figure out a way to calculate damage, at some point, but in the meantime, the baseline was that 'Large rock at velocity = Dead rogue'.

There was no way of telling whether or not this would kill a warrior or paladin at equivalent level, since rogues aren't the most robust of classes. Could this damage be blocked with a shield? Could this damage be resisted with spells? As far as you knew, there wasn't even such a thing as physics based traps, yet, here one was, and it had already claimed a hero. Experimentation would be required.

Another thought chilled your carapace, the thought that **** would rob you of your levels, and possibly, of your newfound knowledge. After every respawn, everything always seemed fuzzy for a while, and Ariadne knew if you would ever figure this out again. Probably not.

Fueled by panic, resolve, and fatalism, you begin to set to work crafting new traps outside the tunnel. Outside of the tunnel is a large, open cavern with several other tunnels that lead into other dens. Such was the entirety of the traps tutorial zone, not too far from the starting dungeon, a simple cavern filled with some bigger variants of your brothers and sisters. For now, you feel exposed and **** out in the open, and you wish for nothing more than to crawl into your tunnel and wait with your trap. You put this down as a lifetime of instinct, as all it would reasonably take is someone to walk in with a shield, and you would be done for. Even leveled up, you still weren't a melee combatant, as 80 HP was PAINFULLY low for a level 8 creature. Such was the way of trapper spiders. It was clear that you could only win through tricks, traps, and deceit.

One great boon you had at your disposal was your natural ability to create things out of spider silk, which was a naturally high quality resource, simply not lootable. It was reasonably springy, and you quickly discover with no small amount of ecstasy that you could weave it into a tight pattern, making a piece of spidersilk cloth, which was naturally durable and strong.

You focus on making a number of the traps on the ceiling, the last place most heroes look, as it stands to reason they would expect you to be in the tunnel. In short order, a major problem arises. THERE'S NOTHING TO BUILD WITH. Bits of stone you can fling, but not much else. Not only would experienced heroes come to call soon enough, but you would need to find a new locale just to find better materials. Evading the attention of heroes was just an added bonus.

Before long, you reason the rogue you just pasted should be respawning and telling his friends about what happened. Should you bail before they get here, or see if you can't nail some more sweet, sweet XP?

Fight or Flight?
