Chapter 38 by simmaster simmaster

What do you choose?

Attack.

You need XP, and a reputation doesn't have to be a bad thing. It could earn you some respect, and maybe send some hunters after you to give you even more XP. Or kill you, but probably give you XP. That is at least how far you get in your reasoning before you leap over the log wall.

Within are a few buildings, most of which borderline shacks, and a bunch of poorly armed and tasty-looking human NPCs. Upon seeing you, their eyes widen in fear but they quickly ready their weapons, or pick some up if they have none.

You decide that this is a good opportunity to finally try your Fearsome Roar, and you roar at the humans, the sound fittingly fearsome. The ones with worse equipment run away screaming, suggesting that they're of lower level than the rest. The aforementioned rest then attacks, and you do the same, ripping through them with wide, powerful swings. Your claws cut into their flesh and armor, and your strong arms knock them off their feet or even send them flying.

They are indeed not very far below your level, probably around the 15 mark, and your hits at least don't one-shot them. You still deal massive damage though, taking each one out in 3-5 strikes, and the sheer **** of your attacks do anything from staggering them to lifting them off their feet, so they have little time to retaliate. Their numbers work in their advantage though and you make sure to remain alert of your surroundings. The only way they could overpower you currently is by attacking you from several sides.

Whenever you're about to get circled, you move to have all your opponents in front of you, where you can focus all your effort without getting flanked. More humans join in as the sounds of your battle alerts everyone within hearing range of the invader. You don't mind; You kill them about as fast as they arrive, making for a perfect grind party. You feel rush after rush of XP, each one quite small, but a rush nonetheless. Every bit of XP counts.

"What the fuck is happening?" you hear someone call. Your gaze turns towards the sound as you continue your fighting, and you spot some humans that look different from the generic NPCs you're slicing through. Heroes, no doubt.

"I thought the event was about orcs, not werewolves!" the same voice says, coming from what appears to be a knight, speaking to a hooded spellcaster of some kind and a barbarian. As your eyes slide across the area, you believe yourself to see some more heroes further away, perhaps still approaching the scene to see what is happening.

"Maybe they updated it to spice things up? Or it could be a wandering boss. The way it's mowing its way through the NPCs, it sure looks like it," the spellcaster responds.

Normally their conversation would be completely inaudible from such distance with all the combat sounds surrounding you, but werewolf senses had many perks. From what you picked up, this town appears to be the location for some kind of invasion event. That was good and bad. Good because the town was designed to be attacked, practically helpless without the aid of heroes. Bad because a lot of heroes could be expected to be around to participate in the event. Oh well, there was no going back now. You could take them on. You could take anyone on. That's what the adrenaline in your veins and the bloodlust in your brain were telling you, at least.

The heroes join the battle, the first sign of this being a green lightning ball flung your way by the spellcaster. Good, at least he's not using fire-based spells... Maybe he doesn't know your elemental resistances, or just can't be bothered to exploit them.

While he continues to fire suboptimal spells at you, which you dodge with varied success, the knight and barbarian quickly advance. And indeed, you see more heroes joining in too. This would be interesting...

You find yourself on a major adrenaline rush. You're loving this. You love the intensity of combat and the excitement of being outnumbered. Your change into a Wild Werewolf must have increased your appreciation for such things. And you got no problems with that. You need to fight to gain XP. If fighting itself becomes this euphoric to you, all the better.

You begin to move around more in order to avoid the spellcaster's attacks, as well as the other ranged attacks that join his as more heroes join the battle. You run towards him to take him out before the rest, but the knight is quickly by his side to defend him while he steps back. You strike the knight with a strong blow, but he doesn't fly off his feet like you had hoped. Instead he only staggers somewhat, quickly regaining his footing and attacking you with his shield raised.

Your target is still the spellcaster, so you leap to the side, bouncing off a nearby building, and find yourself behind the knight, sprinting towards the spellcaster. He sees you coming and prepares a defensive spell. You decide to keep running, attempting to get to him before he finishes casting.

You're not quite fast enough however, and the spellcaster holds his palm before him as a pulse of magical energy is released from him, knocking you back and stunning you. Your face meets the ground and your mind spins. You blink a few times, but your vision remains blurred.

You stumble back to your feet and shake your head, finally regaining your senses. You find that in the few seconds you were stunned, four heroes have surrounded you along with some NPCs while the spellcaster has moved backwards once more.

You fight back viciously, striking hard and often, but you can't focus on all your opponents at once and suffer some hits to your sides and back, and before you can attempt to relocate, you feel a chain coil itself around your neck and pull back.

"You're gonna be mine, doggy..." you hear the owner of the chain say behind you with a female voice. A tamer, probably. She pulls strongly at the chain to bring you down to your back, but you're stronger. You attempt to yank the chain forward to send her flying over your head, but the hits you're taking staggers you too much. The chain around your neck only serves to make it harder to fight back, and instead you find yourself **** to focus most of your attention on not getting pulled down.

Your health drops steadily, not regenerating anywhere close to fast enough to remedy the damage you're receiving from your many foes. But in your current state, you can do little to stop it.

Is this the end?
