Chapter 39 by simmaster simmaster

Is this the end?

The event starts.

You had acted recklessly. And now it seems like you'll pay with your life for it. Your one life. As your health continues to drop and you begin to **** from the chain, panic creeps up on you, followed by regret.

Both of those, however, take their leave when the sound of a horn is heard, followed by battle cries from the other side of the wall. The NPCs suddenly shift their attention from you to whatever is causing the noise, and some of the heroes are momentarily distracted. You use this brief distraction to finally yank the chain off of you. Unfortunately the tamer lets go of the chain before you can swing her into the air, but freedom is what matters. You leap away from your position, onto a roof, from which you leap to another. You need to get away from the fight for a while so you can regenerate.

You jump up to one of the watchtowers, knocking down the guard occupying it, and then you look towards the sound that had been your rescue. As suspected, on the other side of the wall is a horde of orcs. Both male and female, equipped with various gear mainly consisting of hides, bone, and iron. Their weapons appear to most commonly be axes or maces, sometimes accompanied by shields or torches, and in most orcs' cases, their armor leaves much of their muscular bodies exposed.

This is perfect. The orcs will serve as a neat distraction while you regain your health, and then you can use them to **** the heroes to divide their attention between you and them. Once the heroes are all gone, you'll just finish off both the orcs and the human NPCs.

You watch over the battle for a while as your wounds heal steadily, and you're **** to relocate a few times as some heroes still prioritize you over the orcs. Then, when your health goes above 90%, you decide to get back into the fight.

You leap down from your current position, another watchtower, and your Padded Feet provide a safe, fall-damage free landing. Then you attack the three heroes that are still targeting you; the knight, the spellcaster and the barbarian from before. The spellcaster remains on a safe distance while the barbarian attacks you head-on and the knight advances more carefully, making sure to protect the spellcaster.

You happily engage in combat with the barbarian, who is wielding a large, two-handed sword. You have somewhat similar fighting styles, in that you both deliver wide, furious attacks in quick succession while attempting to dodge potential hits. You're winning this fight for a few moments, before the knight is sure that you won't go for the spellcaster and joins in, trying to play the role of the tank, even taunting you.

"Hey big guy, look at me!" he shouts while he swings his spiked mace at you. "I'm shinier and handsomer!"

You ignore him, focusing your efforts on the barbarian while merely attempting to avoid any of his attacks, but not attacking back. You need to take the heroes out one at a time. Even in your battle-crazed state, you recognize that as a good strategy.

For a moment you glance at the spellcaster to see what he's up to, since no magical projectiles are coming your way. He appears focused with some lengthy spell seemingly directed at his teammates. He's trying to buff them. At least then he won't offer a third source of harm to make it even harder for you to divide your attention... But it's clear to you that you need to finish your melee encounter fast.

As the barbarian's health drops into the dangerously low values, his attacks seem to become faster and stronger. Probably some kind of last stand ability. For a short while this proves difficult to handle, but then he attempts to perform some special attack that leaves him wide open for a solid two seconds. You use the opportunity to get in real close and sink your large teeth into his exposed neck, biting down hard. That combined with your claws tearing into his flesh finally drains his remaining health, and he falls to the ground. You notice that the spellcaster's spell is cancelled. He must have been targeting the barbarian. Excellent, now he'll have to start over.

You finally shift your attention to the knight, glad to be able to focus on him fully since he did get in a few hits on you while fighting the barbarian despite your attempts to stay moving. You strike him with blow after blow, your claws passing through his strong armor to a small degree, all according to your Razor Claws ability.

Again you have the upper hand for a while, but then the knight begins to glow with a faint, red light as the spellcaster finishes casting his buff. Soon after that, the knight manages to land a hit on you, and his wounds seem to close slightly. Great... A vampirism buff. The spellcaster must be some kind of dark magic-oriented class... However, out of the buffs he could have given the knight, that's one of the less useful ones. You're already landing more hits than you receive, so all that has changed is that the battle might go on for a bit longer. You continue your **** for a short time, until you feel the spellcaster cast another spell, this time on you.

You feel a debuff take effect, but you can't feel what kind. Only that it feels... bad. As if the air around you suddenly got hotter in an unpleasant sense.

"Fucking Bernie, always rushing in before the tank's even in position," the spellcaster mutters. "Oh well, guess I'll finish this thing off before it takes you too."

"You should have done that from the start!" the knight scolds, trying to keep your attention.

"Yeah, whatever. I just try to have fun and take it easy. That's what games are for. And hell, you guys are way more competitive than me and somehow I'm still always the MVP here," the spellcaster snaps back as you start moving towards him. From their conversation, it appears that you really should kill him as soon as possible.

"Just fire it up," the knight mutters.

"One sec. Keep him occupied for just a liiittle longer..."

The spellcaster is in the process of casting a spell that from the looks of the dark red and orange swirls of magical energy around his hands doesn't bode well for you. You sprint on all fours towards him, ignoring the knight entirely. Whatever debuff you're currently under the effect of is connected to that spell, that much is obvious to you.

Do you make it in time?
