Chapter 9 by Cantalope Cantalope

Where does Eirene live before she set out adventuring?

A Mansion in Ostvale.

It takes some serious patience but you eventually pry the location of Eirene's starting point from her backstory: She lived with her family in the Drakes Mansion, located near the palace at the highest point of Ostvale. Mountain cities live up to their name: your host is about ready to collapse by the time you reach the front gates.

"Halt! Who goes-Lady Eirene?" You turn to the gate-guard, his surprised look magnified by his sizable mustache. Straightening to minimize your battered look you turn towards him, "Oh, Hello..."
"...Fieldman my lady." "Oh yes, of course. Sorry, my night vision is just terrible." You stare at eachother for a moment. "...are you going to let me in?"

He scrambles to unlock the gate, obviously perplexed by your presence. "Did you not say you were striking out for adventure and fame?" The annoyance that pulses from Eirene's brain tells you that's not what she had told him and you play the role, "Fieldman, I did not say that." He frowns before sighing tiredly, "Right: I'm setting out to prove myself to my parents and purge the elf scourge from the eastern settlements." His immitation of your voice is a high falsetto that instantly makes Eirene's blood boil. You laugh delightedly, earning a look of shock from the guard. You think you would get along splendidly with this man.

"I...went to the quarry and cleared a cave of monsters but...my guide was slain by a vicious beast who fell upon him with a stone spear. I believe that I am more useful here...protecting the city from the mountain denizens." You stick your nose up nobly. The look the guard gives you makes it clear he thinks that's a load of crap...but he thinks it's Eirene's load of crap. Not the parasite-glued-to-her-stomach's. You can practically hear his thoughts: Spoiled brat probably broke a nail pushing open the city gate and decided to run home to mommy and daddy.

"Your mother will be overjoyed at your return, I'll walk you in so I can announce you." Oh what a gentleman. You slide an arm through his, leaning your head lightly against his shoulder. He stiffens, and you can practically hear his heart pounding, but he makes no comment. Eirene on the other hand is furiously battering at the walls of your control, fighting every inch of your contact with her servant. You calmly thicken your barriers and tune her out, trying not to stumble on your shaky legs as you walk in with the perplexed guardsman.
