In a world just one genetic misstep away from our own, humanity has spent our entire history fighting against our own low rate of fertility. Children are so sought after and precious that any time NOT spent trying to create them is widely considered wasted. Sexual penetration is constrained by consent, but all other erotic acts are basically considered continuously fair game, in public or at home. Once a person comes of age, their body is an open target for any and all that might desire it. No-one questions this. No-one is shocked by it. It is simply how things have always been.

In the not too distant future, cybernetic enhancements are just about beginning to breakthrough into fashionable, mainstream usage. Tight regulations are kept on the likes of muscular upgrades and dangerous hardware installations, of course. However due to the governmental lobbying of telecommunication companies, surgical implants to allow a user to connect to the internet mentally and visually are fast becoming the must-have fashion accessory of the moment. Such surgically-applied accessories come at a high price though… far beyond the allowances of those demographics most for them. Which has, of course, inevitably led to an extensive black market opening up, catering mainly for those young, naive and foolhardy enough to risk allowing the un-registered or unqualified access to their skulls and minds. Besides the obvious medical risks involved… There are also rumours abound of such underground clinics using old, out-of-date software with gaping holes in their security protocols. Or conspiracy theories of such shady businesses actually being paid to install backdoors into their client’s heads, to allow all sorts of untoward access. There are certainly sites on the web where those in the know can piggyback onto the streaming visual data of any number of real individuals going about their daily lives. A voyeur’s dream which is kept semi-legal by half-hearted banner announcements that everyone involved is most definitely a voluntary exhibitionist or paid actor, offering their live POV to several thousand strangers at once. Of course, none of this is enough to discourage those to have access to the latest technological craze… And the mainstream media seems strangely slow and quiet to report on any cases of misuse. So our protagonist, Sam, is only the latest amongst a multitude to have saved up all their meagre, teenage earnings in order to be shown through the hidden back door of the local tattoo parlour. They simply can’t wait to wake up tomorrow and try out their new implants!
