However, a stranger arriving is a time for mourning too, because for each new citizen another must die... Now ten strange people appear at the gates of Blushing. These are the first new people who have approached the city in twenty-five years, for Blushing is poor, hundreds of leagues from any neighbors, and the sacred spring which sustains its people gives only a few dozen gallons of new water each day, barely enough to offset evaporation. The Strangers speak a language no one in the city knows, but of course they must be welcomed, for already the curses of the Star Gods begin to appear among those born in the city. Harelips, clubbed feet, and other signs that Blushing has not had new blood among their ancestors in too long are increasingly prevalent, if these ten do not replenish their favor with the Star Lords Blushing is doomed.
