Chapter 5 by Cantalope Cantalope

Now what?

You pass another group.

Moving in the darkness isn't as easy with human vision, you're starting to wish you'd brought the torch. Your mortal fear of fire had compelled you to snuff it out the first chance you got but you were regretting it now. Fortunately you grew up in this cave so you're familiar with the ins and outs. Not that anything was particularly dangerous. It was a tutorial zone after all. A peal of slightly maniacal laughter escapes your lips before you reign yourself back in. "Yes, yes, I'm very cool for defeating the tutorial master...aand capturing a paladin for my new body!" You do a little jig in the darkness but have to stop and catch your breath. Wow, this was going to be a problem if you had to keep her so low on health in order to control her. Hm...You were going to have to find some way to level up again.

You turn a corner and almost run into a green-cloaked hunter, deftly dodging the alarmed swipe he takes at you with his bow. "Oh! Sorry miss, I thought you were a..." His trails off as he sees your face, mouth hanging slightly open. You giggle, unable to stop yourself. It was weird (and awesome) being a thing of beauty instead of a monster. "Hey sailor, got a light?" His eyes widened and he fumbled at his belt, thrusting a flare into your hands without question. A tutorial giver identical to the one you slew earlier pushes past the boy, carrying a torch and completely ignoring you. "This way boy, we don't want to spend all day in here!"

The boy casts an annoyed look at the Foreman before looking back to you, finally seeing your dirty and dented armor "Um, are you alright?"
"Oh yeah, just a bit of a rough patch down one of the side-tunnels. Word of advice, stay on the main path." You flip your hair and the boy's knees wobble slightly. God this was fun! Eirene's presence in your head pushes hard against your control and you hear her voice echoing in your mind, Stop flirting with that thing!...just kill me and be done with it! You frown and respond to her mentally, Sorry to disappoint but I don't think he's going to kill you. I was talking to YOU! Stop talking to that creature and get out of my body! ...Ok I'm really confused here. He's really...really handsome, I don't see what your problem is- I don't care what he looks like! He's a half-elf you dimwit! I can't associate with that!

Ah. Noble bigotry. It all makes sense now. Slamming the door on her psyche you smile coyly at the boy, dispelling the awkward silence that had settled while you argued with your host. "So...come here often?" He laughs shakily and seems a little overly hesitant to respond. He's probably not used to humans treating him politely. Let alone hitting on him. You chat idly with the boy and get a few tidbits of information about the outside world, just so you're not completely unprepared:

  1. You're in Ostvale: Jewel of the White Mountains
  2. The city is ruled by human nobles (from whom your host body is descended)
  3. There had been a prolonged war between the men and elves of the mountains, resulting in a human victory and leaving the mountain elves scattered and hunted while the humans expanded into their newly won territory.
  4. Elves were demonized in the eyes of the people and half-elves were looked down upon.

Hm. The more you know.

The boy is giving you an odd look, like he's wondering how you could have missed all this, but you bat your lashes at him and he quickly forgets your ignorance. The tutorial guide impatiently waits for the boy up ahead, every so often calling something haughty and vaguely racist back at him. You debate whether you can drop another stalactite on him without the boy noticing but ultimately decide against it, smiling and giving the boy a light kiss on the cheek as thanks. You light up the flair and continue towards the entrance. Looking back you giggle at how the boy is still standing rooted to the spot, staring dazedly back at you.

Outside...
