Chapter 13

Does she make it in time?

Yes, with five minutes to spare!

Molly bombs through the corridors of the guild hall down to the basement, nearly knocking over a dozen other people, shouting 'Sorry!' over her shoulder, and skids to stop outside a door marked 'Quartermaster' with the word 'mistress' written in chalk above the word 'master' which is similarly crossed out.

She knocks that same knock and then opens the door.

"Who is it?" a soprano voice calls from back amidst several long rows of shelves, and molly calls out "Molly Jade Crystal Carver mam! I know you are about to leave but I just need two Echo Scarves, color is unimportant, you can even pull them out of the trade bins for all I care!"

A tall Moon Elven lass, which is to say about 4'10", comes out wiping her hands with a cloth and says. "Color may not matter to YOU Molly but that is why you will never be an officer in this guild. We are one of the biggest and oldest guilds in the game because we take PRIDE in our colors and device, and as such it is my duty to make sure noobs like you receive the proper colored gear and wear it proudly!" She declares staring Molly in the eyes, her own like two chips of flint.

"Fine, I just didn't want to keep you is all..." Molly mumbles, but the woman has already disappeared and molly stands to wait behind the counter.

A few minutes later the woman comes back with a black scarf and two block printed in imitation of the banner on the outside of the building. "You're in luck Molly, we have two of the new 'Guild Pride' scarves that we finally got authorization for last month in stock, you can finally de-equip that 'noob rag' that wolf of yours wears and replace it with proper 'colors'." She says turning over the three echo scarves. There is a quick motion from Molly and suddenly the scarf tied around 'Fenris' throat is no longer white but instead one of the two 'Guild Pride' scarves that she was given and she hands the white one to the 'Quartermistress'.

"Thank you Molly, that will compensate for the black." She says...

"How much for the 'pride' ones?" Molly asks.

"Oh, those are free." The Quartermistress says with a wicked grin.

"WHY?" Molly suddenly demands suspiciously.

"You can't leave the guild as long as any of your pets are still wearing 'pride' scarves." The Quartermistress says with a snicker and then starts shoving molly to the door. "Now get going young lady, I need to lock up and log out!" And Molly, knuckles white on the other two scarves, stomps out the door and slams it behind her.

"The NERVE!" Molly shouts again slamming her pewter tankard down on bartop and spilling some of the mead in it onto the scared and aged wood.

You left the guild hall by the same door you entered it and headed straight to an all night tavern, it being well after midnight by the time you had exited. Molly ordered a pitcher of meed and has sat there drinking, and will not even let you get CLOSE to the scarves that will let you speak, putting them into her pack as she stormed out of the building!

You glare at her from where you sit on the bartop, tasting the air which smells of cheap ****, cheaper tallow candles, and sweat. From the way she keeps mumbling to herself she seems to be trying to decide between three options, to use the black scarf on Fenris, quit the guild and her party, and sell the other two to a shonky shop who will trade them back to the guild, use the black one on Fenris, quit the guild, and BURN the other two, taking a 100GP loss but keeping them out of the guild's hands, though she knows the guild will just make more, or leave Fenris with the 'guild pride' scarf and use the black one on you, sticking with the guild until she can afford to get rid of the one on Fenris and THEN quit.

For yourself you don't think ANY of these ideas are good ones, once you become a 'guild player' you are effectively branded for life as a member of that guild, most others wont have you unless you are at ridiculously high levels and have been out of your guild for YEARS, and the members of your old guild will often hunt and PK you repeatedly, meaning you have to migrate areas, or even servers, and if her guild is 'One of the oldest and largest' it probably has branches on most servers and in most areas, meaning she will have to become an 'outlaw' to escape from them, which for reasons you cannot explain, even to yourself, you don't want to have happen to her.

"Well, what do you think?" She says looking at you, drunk enough to not care that you don't want to reveal you are sapient in front of a bar full of people. "Should I stick with the guild for now?"

How do you defuse the situation?
