Wet and cold

Jamie’s alarm went off at 4:00 am. She got up, and turned on all the lights in the apartment. She banged around in the kitchen, loudly asking me where the coffee was, then answered herself that she found it.

It really wasn’t a far drive to the Rocky Mountain National Park. I don’t know why we had to wake up so early. It was going to a long day. We got to the trailheads as the sun was coming up. We loaded up our packs. I still couldn’t believe Jamie was carrying that monstrosity but she shouldered it like a champ.

We started hiking. Monica more than half asleep, mumbling about how I owed her for this. Monica liked the outdoors, but she wasn’t really in athletic shape. This was going to be a challenge for her. But she stepped up, and did it with little complaint.

Jamie was always in the lead on the trail with me behind, admiring her legs in those tight black spandex pants. I was in middle, encouraging Monica, trying to slow Jamie’s pace so we weren’t left behind.

When the sun finally broke the clouds, we were miles into the hike and sweating. We were at our first landmark: a small clear mountain lake. Jamie took the opportunity to strip off her hoodie. We packed up and continued the hike.

Then the clouds covered the sun and it started raining.
