Chapter 4 by jealco jealco

What do you do?

Use the chaos to slip out

The event's early enough that your ears are assailed by the various patrons swearing and complaining about not getting their meals, even as they rise and head for the gates. You take off for the doors with them. Experience has taught you that staying in the restaurant is a terrible idea. You've died several times because someone set the place on fire, and not all of those times were monsters.

As you set foot on the cobblestone street, you look to your left. The guards are putting up a valiant defense, but as usual, the poor bastards don't stand a chance of stopping them. Some of the less experienced heroes are charging towards the gates, hoping to defend them, while the more experienced ones wait, letting the novices soften up the enemy horde a bit while they prepare defenses.

Not that you really care about that. Anywhere but here is a better place to be right now, and you veer right, heading towards the city center. Even as you run, you know the city center isn't going to offer much more safety than where you were. The raid is powerful enough to ensure that other heroes must come from nearby locales to secure the city. It does, though, buy you some time to think, and maybe come up with a plan to escape. As you run, you scoop up a fist-sized sharp stone from the ground. It isn't much, but it's better than nothing, considering the monsters and some of the "heroes" who will soon flood the city.

A few moments later, you duck into an abandoned building, your chest heaving with exertion. You know the place is completely uninhabited, and more importantly free of monsters and loot, because the heroes who frequent your restaurant have mentioned more than once that there's nothing here. It won't afford you cover for long, but hopefully it will be enough time to give you the opportunity you need.

What's your plan?
