Chapter 9 by madmage madmage

What's caught you attention now?

That halfling again

You shift through the aether, settling your focus inside a conveniently place rat. You turn the animal’s head taking in its surroundings. You were in the rafters of a small chapel. The walls lined with niches dedicated to various gods. None to you however, you sigh mentally. You send the rat scurry along the wall looking for the halfling. You finally spot her tucked into an unused corner with a bowl filled with dirt. You stare down at her confused for a moment, until you see her light a joss stick, a useful all purpose offering, and add it to the others burning in the bowl. Apparently not finding a shrine dedicated to the god who saved her from the baneworms, she had made one herself. You were frankly touched by the gesture, and pleased with the steady stream of power rising from her offering. Then you realize the halfling is praying.
“I know this can’t possibly be enough for saving my life.” The halfling said. “But it’s the best I can do at the moment. I mean, I don’t even know your name.” The halfling sighed, “If there is anything I can do for you, anything at all, please let me know.”
The sincerity of the prayer filled you. The depressed cynical side of you wondered if she would be so grateful if she knew who she was praying to, but you quickly told that little voice to be silent. This was frankly too good an opportunity to pass up. You think quickly, wanting to reply to the prayer before the halfling left the chapel. Then an idea came to you and you quickly shaped the power you had collected.
The halfling, still deep in contemplation of her unknown rescuer, nearly jumped out of her skin when the rat tugged on the hem of her pants. Recovering, she looked down at the small vermin and the symbol floating over its head. A symbol only heroes and gods could see.
“A quest?” Cautiously she reached down and tapped the rat on the head. On cue it turned and darted a short distance and then turned and looked back at the halfling and beckoned her. “I’m supposed to follow you?” The rat nodded. “Alright, I’ll follow the rat.” She got up and took a step towards to rodent, before turning to look at her makeshift shrine. “I won’t let you down.” She said before chasing after the fast moving rat.

Well that was interesting, you think as you pull back into the aether. It appears you have gained a worshiper of sorts. Only time would tell if she would stay true to you, it would take a while before she reached her destination, but you had hopes.

What draws you now?
