Chapter 10

How does the resettlement progress?
Fairly well, with some interruptions in-between
The ruins had a fair few roaming bandits and wild animals to clear by ****, but nothing they could not handle. Soon enough the ruins were clear and primed for recolonization, the first waves of settlers comprising laborers, soldiers, artisans and farmers to pave the way.
Most of the walls were archaic and crumbled, unable to stand against modern trebuchets and other magical spells, so they needed to be completely demolished and rebuilt and the houses proofed against the elements. Using a combination of runes, spells and mundane technology, the Dalish refugees were soon resettled into their new homes.
Dwarves from Orzammar also came to recolonise the ruins and lend their expertise in stonemasonry and runelore, their numbers rapidly replenishing due to the Panacea's effects, and Humans from Skyhold as well as those from the Hunterlands.
The plan was for the Dalish to slowly acclimatize to socializing with the other races and City Elves, both to draw them out of their isolative lifestyle and to integrate them as your citizens as part of your ambitious plan to unite all of Thedas.
Yet, of course, nothing ever remains peaceful for long.
Leliana lay writhing and crying on the bed, her legs spread apart as she pushed hard with the latest wave of contractions hitting her abdomen, gripping your hand for comfort.
"Oh Maker, please let this end quickly!" Leliana cried, face contorted in pain.
The Healers diagnosed her to be pregnant with as many as six children - too many for a normal pregnancy. Another effect of the Panacea, perhaps?
"Hold on, my love, looks like the first head's coming through!" You said.
The midwife in charge gently massaged her inflated abdomen, just as the next wave of contractions hit.
"Aahh!" Leliana cried.
After much effort, your firstborn son came into the world. Inheriting his mother's hair and fair skin, he gained your emerald eyes and pointed ears, looking like the perfect balance between the slender grace of an Elf and the hardiness of a Human.
"His name is Alralan," You said.
"He's so beautiful..." Said Leliana.
As the midwives washed and cleaned Alralan, cleaning his mouth of fluids to let him cry healthily, Leliana then gave birth to two more girls, both completely identical looking with your black hair and Leliana's blue eyes - also Elves. They also seemed larger than normal, the reason why Leliana screamed herself so hoarse you felt as if your ears ruptured.
"Selwyn and Arilanna," You named them.
Then came two more boys and one more girl whom you respectively named Atros, Atlan and Isewyn.
With the last of the infants washed, cleaned and wrapped up, Leliana fell limp on the bed, panting heavily and covered in sweat as you wiped her forehead clean and patted her comfortingly.
"You did good, Leliana," You said, "All our children are healthy and safely delivered."
Leliana could not speak a word, but nonetheless smiled with joy as she cradled your children, nursing two of them on her inflated teats - having increased considerably in size to a D cup during her short pregnancy.
"I'll have someone take over your duties for today, Leliana," You said, "Take as much rest as you need."
Leliana limply nodded, letting the midwives clean her and the healers give her afterbirth care with gentle massages.
Her pussy was never going to be the same again, that was for certain.
"I beg your pardon, but why should we let the Humans and Dwarves settle alongside us?"
Ioranni, predictably and exasperatingly so, began raising complaints on the integration policy you adopted on your recolonization of the abandoned ruins, and several Dalish Elves said the same thing.
"Have I not already explained to you?" You said.
"Frankly, I do not ever get why we should settle with the Humans!" Said Ioranni, "They destroyed the Dales, and persecuted our people for centuries! Why should we just hold hands with them when the land is ours by right?"
"Sit down, now," You ordered.
Taken aback by your sudden change in tone, Ioranni backs down and takes a seat, swalloing nervously at your harsh stare.
"Do you want to know why the Dalish lost their second home after Arlathan?" You said.
"What else is there to know?" Said Ioranni.
"No, it's not because the Humans are evil as the elders would have you think," You said, "It was because we refused to maintain our alliance with the Humans and even spat on the hand that fed us, even though they shed blood alongside us to take the fight to Tevinter and help us establish the Dales. It was because we believed ourselves the superior race when the Humans clearly held supreme power and influence on the continent, even to the point we believed the Second Blight not our concern when it struck."
"Isn't that because we are the Elvhen, the chosen children?" Said Ioranni.
"So that's what you think?" You said, "I'm disappointed, truly."
"I-W-What do you mean by that?" Said Ioranni, "Are you saying we are not superior?"
"Yes, and we will never be, and neither will the Humans be," You said, "Because if there is one thing I have learnt, it is that this world is a dog-eat-dog world where the strong devour the weak. Our ancestors allowed themselves to become weak, so they were destroyed by the stronger Human nations. It's as simple as that."
"Wha..."
Ioranni looked at you as if you had lost your mind.
"Then... then what? The world will never let us reclaim our rightful place in the world? It will never let us reclaim what we once were?" She said.
"The world does not care about past glories," You said, "It only cares about how we survive and thrive by adapting to the changing times."
"So in essence, we Dalish are far behind the times and living on borrowed time?" Said Ioranni.
You nodded in reply.
"I think we Elves have become too full of ourselves, being the so-called Firstborn. Like the Humans, we're born, we live and die, and we are at the mercy of the world," You said, "The Dales never truly had or maintained any alliances and political friendships with the outside world, and according to records I dug up, the Dales were divided into several different factions that at times refused to trade with each other. Quite a dysfunctional nation for freed slaves, isn't it?"
Ioranni said nothing.
"And turns out, the impetus for the Exalted March against the Dales was a simple love affair between a Human Knight and a Dalish Elf," You said, "Stupid reason, I know, but the tension was already there, waiting to snap."
Ioranni cradled her face in her hands, feeling the truth of your words.
"So from the days our ancestors founded the Dales, it was doomed to failure and destruction," Said Ioranni, "But even so, we can't just accept the Humans like that, not when our whole lives revolved around hating and mistrusting Humans."
"Which is exactly why we have to make the effort to adapt now, Ioranni," You said, "The times are changing; what matters now is how we adapt to survive, and how we carve our place in the world."
Ioranni nodded, saying, "I... I'm not sure if I can take your words to heart, but... I will take them into consideration."
And with that, she left, leaving you to sigh to yourself.
"Hopefully, the Panacea will work its magic soon, and we can start having a greater population to supplement our manpower needs," You muttered, "Orzammar will still need months to renovate its entire infrastructure, though from what I hear, they're already making huge strides in steel casting technology and researching this concrete."
According to enthusiastic engineers and researchers from Orzammar, the reinforced concrete they were working on would allow for huge advancements in construction as time spent would be drastically reduced, and with mages artificially generating stone and metal ore deposits you could have a virtually limitless supply of concrete.
Though such technology remained experimental and needed further refinement.
"Well, one step at a time, I supposed," You said.
Are there any delicious treats to enjoy?
