Chapter 4 by Nemo of Utopia Nemo of Utopia

Which Monster Do You Want To Follow?

An Inteligent Giant Crab

You are not sure when exactly you became intelligent, but you know you are weird. You are a crab the size of a large normal wolf, about four feet across at your legs and three feet long from your claw tips to your back spines. You live on an otherwise fairly unremarkable island in the middle of the ocean, you've wandered all over the island and discovered that it contains very little of significant interest save about a half dozen other giant crabs like yourself, except unintelligent, roughly 100 coconut trees, between 50 and a thousand berry bushes, and a herd of between 20 and 30 goats.

Oh, there's one other interesting thing here: a ruined stone temple of some kind on the island's highest peak that you can't even approach within five meters of... BUT, back to those goats and the berry bushes!

The reason that the Goats and the berry bushes vary between 30-and-20 and 1000-and-50 is that goats are vicious and destructive little environmental pests who will happily destroy any ecosystem they are introduced to other than their native one of hellishly steep alpine meadow-land full of wolves by eating all the vegetation that holds the soil in place. Thank the gods once a year the island re-sets and the goats go back to 30 and the shrubbery (goats preferred food) goes back to 1000 bushes. Now, you would think that the goats would multiply over that year, not diminish, right?

Oh, they would, except for YOU. You've made it your life-goal to exterminate the flock of goats while there's still enough bushes for the ecosystem to recover, and in the three years since you've become intelligent, you've never managed it, but you get closer each time. The first year the flock actually increased in number, at the end of the year there were 37 goats left, and only a palisade and moat of sharpened wooden spikes kept the beasts at bay from the last fifty bushes, forcing them to live on kelp for the final month. The second year you did better, their numbers fell, slightly, 27 left by the end, and 11 more bushes survived. The third year you've done MUCH better: you killed three the first WEEK, and whittled at them every chance you got all year, with everything from pit traps to a primitive catapult. Over 100 bushes survived this year, or at least, they will if the reset happens tonight at midnight as it has both previous years.

You KNOW you could have done so much better if it weren't for one thing: you can only stay out of the water for at most 14 hours, and then must return to the sea for half as long as you were out of it. It's during those water breaks that the goats do their worst damage.

However, tonight, just before the Midnight Reset, something is going to shake up your tiny little world like nothing else you've imagined...

What Something Is That?
