Chapter 9 by simmaster simmaster

Question is, how best to deal with them?

Attempt to split them up again.

From the trail you followed you know that these three spread out a reasonably far distance from each other earlier. Not very wise if your tank is dependent on a healer and the rest of your party is dependent on a tank. If you can split them back up for long enough, you could hopefully dispose of the healer and the mage and then worry about the tank later.

How to do that though... Wait, waaait... Idea.

You quietly approach them until you're right behind. It's tempting to attack, but you know you'd most likely lose. So instead of throwing yourself over one of them, you throw yourself over the healer in a fashion that is totally different from what it would have been like if you were intending to attack them, and manage to grab his tiara and yank it off his head. You then quickly retreat into the darkness of the forest, relieved you managed to act quickly enough to not get the tank's sword in your back or get hit by a spell.

"What the hell was that?!" you hear the tank ask.

"A werewolf," the mage responds.

"A werewolf? They aren't supposed to be here, are they?"

"Who cares?!" the healer cries. "It took my tiara! That thing was expensive!"

"It was a weak one," the mage says. "Let's spread out and look for it. Any of us could easily take it out."

"Are you sure?" the tank asks, not seeming convinced.

Yes, he's super sure, you think to yourself as if it would have any influence on the events unfolding.

"It wasn't even fully grown," the mage assures the tank. "Besides, nothing says we won't still be close together when we find it."

You're almost tempted to spare the mage for making your plan work, and for now you will. Your first target is the healer. With him still alive, killing the two others will obviously be a lot harder.

As the three heroes move further apart, you stalk the healer who clearly is not used to navigating a forest, not paying attention to obvious hiding places. Which fortunately makes him very easy to sneak up on.

And you do.

And then you bite him in the neck.

You cover his mouth with your paws as you do this, and you're relieved to hear a muffled gurgling where there should be a loud scream, telling you that you've succeeded with your attempt to attack him silently. Just in case he's not yet dead, you chew on his throat until his body drops to the ground on its own. Aw, no level up?

As the healer comes to rest on the ground, you drop the tiara next to him. If the others find the tiara, they have no reason to split up anymore. And if they find the corpse of their teammate, they DEFINITELY don't have a reason to split up anymore.

Next is the mage. You can still smell him, and quickly find him. He looks annoyed and mutters unflattering things about the healer. You sneak up on him and attempt to do the same to him as you did to the healer, but you can't seem to bite through his hood enough to kill him, and you misjudge the placement of his mouth because of his hood, failing to cover it with your paws. He screams and yanks himself free of your jaws, spinning around to face you.

"THERE you are, you bad doggie..." he mumbles as a fireball flares up in his hand.

Uh oh.

You pounce at the mage, attempting to knock him off his feet before he can cast his spell, but you feel the burning pain as your fur is set ablaze. You do however manage to get the mage lying on his back and you bite and scratch him while he's yelling for help and attempting to cast more spells at you, most of which fail but some weaker ones join the fireball in its mission to sear off your fur.

Finally you hear the rewarding *Ding* of a level gained and another hero slain. You get off the mage's dead body and roll around on the ground attempting to put out the flames in your fur. Once they finally die off, you get back up on your feet. Whose idea was it to design your fur to be so flammable?! Sure, you were weak to fire, but there's a difference between taking more damage from fire and practically being drenched in gasoline!

Your inner complaints to the developers are interrupted by the tank finally emerging between the trees. The time it took for her to get here makes it clear to you that she's not very fast, which is to be expected with all that armor.

This is the first time you see her from the front, and while you were hoping to see her face, it's covered by the rusty visor of a helmet. Oh well, if you win this battle you can always remove it.

"Well..." she mutters upon seeing the mage's corpse. "So much for 'any of us could easily take it out'... Oh well, time to cut you down to size, doggie."

What was up with people calling you doggie?! Sure, it was better than things you had been called before, but still... Not even wolfie?

That aside, you needed more of a strategy to fight this tank. She was supposed to be able to take quite a hit, and you no longer had the element of surprise on your side. Maybe you could use your higher agility to outlast her?

How does the fight go?
