Chapter 5 by rabbitjack rabbitjack

Will you take advantage of the gnome, or keep looking?

He's practically asking for it

You wait for him to leave before moving out of your vantage point. Taking a quick side trip to grab some food, you make sure you take care of your needs before settling in to wait for your prey. You're not certain, but you suspect that gaining a Class has given you more patience. Regardless, you find the set of bushes that the gnome likes to hide in, then step back into another set of bushes further in. You even take the time to rub some dirt on your face and stick some small branches behind your ears in an attempt to improve your camouflage. Then setting your spear down on the ground next to you, you wait.

Distant war cries and bellows from the Players fighting mobs assure you that things are continuing more or less as normal here, though nothing comes very close to your hiding spot. From time to time, the boars and gnolls that inhabit the area come walking down the trail to get some water before returning to their patrol lanes. Its... pretty dull, honestly. Never the less, you keep your goal firmly in mind and wait it out. It helps to imagine yourself as the king of the goblins, with a cool fort and followers and a harem of Player girls!

Your daydreams are put aside in an instant when the off-key humming of an approaching Player reaches your over-sized ears. You focus in on him immediately, but do not move. Its hard to see the trail from your hiding spot, but you see some hints of frizzy red hair and a short figure moving around on the trail. Its him!

You could try to sneak attack him while he sets up his traps, but you're not confident in your ability to follow through if he survives the first attack. You have had some time to consider this situation, and have decided to try something sneaky and underhanded. Perfect for your goblin sensibilities!

After he has set up his traps, the Rogue settles into the bushes in front of you, squatting on his heels to lower his profile and wavering into the 'Concealment' effect. This is the moment you've been waiting for. Picking up your spear, you slowly stand up and work the kinks out of your limbs that have resulted from your long period of inactivity. Then, you charge!

The Rogue is surprised by a goblin battle cry coming right from behind him, and jumps up as you startle him. Your shoulder catches him in the lower back, and you push him right out of the bush and into the trap that he set on the trail! A net envelops him in an instant and he is hoisted up into the air suspended from a gently bobbing branch overhead. You can see him struggling to reach his knives, but one arm is pinned behind his back and the other is stuck awkwardly outside of the net to grasp nothing but air. Your snickers as you play pinata with him combined with falling into his own trap make for a particularly undignified ****.

'Ding!' the announcement chimes, and you feel yourself growing more powerful as the new level sets in. Wasting no time, you open the stat sheet with shaking hands. Will it work!?

What's your next step toward Goblin supremacy?
