Chapter 3 by Cantalope Cantalope

Did it just level up?

Indeed...

How...incredibly unexpected. The morphworm had incapacitated the hero and crushed the tutorial npc under the broken stalactite. You feel the XP rushing into the dumbfounded creature and jump at the opportunity: you whisper into the ephemeral energy, influencing it in the subtlest way so that your voice be made clear. The worm shudders as the level up hits him, carrying new abilities, strength, and an echo of your voice. My child, you must remind the world of my existence. Make it remember my name. Make them remember Nimrev... You wait. Did your message come through?

Nimrev? A dim pulse of energy cascades through your essence in response to the thought. Yes! Yes, you were finally heard! Of course you still couldn't talk with the worm now that the XP had been absorbed. It was rather like sending a letter. Now that your message was sent you had no paper to write any more. Hopefully the worm was resourceful enough to interpret your message properly.

You listen intently to the creatures mind. It was among the more complicated intellects of your children, largely due to its body-snatching abilities at higher levels. You watch apprehensively as the worm chooses a specialization...oh thank vileness, it chose parasite. A tunneler would be far less useful to you. An approving smile dances through your essence as you watch the newly leveled worm crawl over to the incapacitated paladin and squirm under her armor just as she begins to stir. It takes several long moments of struggling and screaming before the parasite assumes control of the paladins body and she slumps to the cave floor.

The look of elation that spreads across the girls face, now controlled by the morphworm, warms your metaphoric heart. After the initial shock of having a humanoid body wears off, its thoughts turn towards your message. It's trying to comprehend its meaning and how to react. After a few moments the girl rises, straightens her armor, kisses the other worms goodbye (what a nice young parasite), and begins making her way to the entrance of the cave. There wasn't much you could do now, it was out of your hands...

You feel the paladin, trapped in her own body, screaming out a prayer to the goddess Anari for aid. You almost snort at the prospect: Anari didn't help anyone she deemed unclean and the parasitized paladin certainly didn't meet her standards. All the same, no point in letting the cry go out. It was a simple matter, even for you, to silence the prayer before it reached another deity. Now all you could do was watch.

Do you have another opportunity to influence reality?
