Your set-up boss Charlie has the kind of build you might expect from a dancer -- a modern dancer, not a ballerina, compact and strong-limbed. She's wearing a black top with a print pattern of big and little lipstick kisses in all sorts of colors, until you get a closer look while she's carrying the other side of a heavy amplifier. You don't know if you're imagining things or if it's actually a mixture of full-lipped kisses, spread pussy prints, and a few little asshole stars.

Charlie seems too wrapped up in getting the band set up to give you any particular grief, so aside for some earnest looks and hurry-up motions, it's pretty much a pick it up here, set it down there, move it over a little kind of job.

Mona waves you away when you come up to check if she needs any help with the sound board. "Just run these cables up to the stage," she says. "Make sure they're flat. Flat, no loops or twists."

And so it goes until it's time for sound check.

Rowan is the Bleeding Gardenias' lead singer. She looks ready to move, with a pair of high-top sneakers painted all over with bright colors, a pair of loose black shorts, and a top printed with something that looks like an explosion of white gardenia flowers and flying red droplets dripping down to a hem of bright blood-red. You wonder if the band or the blouse came first.

Charlie checks with the other band members before she perches behind her drum kit. As soon as she alights, she starts tapping a drumstick against her palm, pacing an unheard rhythm.

Sochil -- Mona told you that's how to pronounce "Xochitl", though her mom still calls her "Florencia" -- she switches out on guitar and bass. She's tapping her foot to a different rhythm than Charlie's. Mona takes Sochil's sound check first. Sochil's wearing a loosely draped white blouse with a bold diamond emblem in the middle, echoed out in smaller diamonds in bright psychedelic colors radiating from the center.

Jessie does keyboards. Long-fingered and tall, her curly hair tightly wrapped in a black-yellow-and-red cloth, wearing a black bodysuit that makes her almost invisible in the corner of the stage. Her eyes are on her boards until it's time for sound check.

There's a little break before it's time for the band's first set. You get a soda with lots of ice. It could be a long evening, and you gotta be your best, or at least you have to drive home, so beer is off the table tonight.

You catch Mona leaning close to Rowan, talking about something. You feel a tickle going down your spine. Rowan's looking at you. You meet her eyes, but you can't read her expression. That short-on-the sides hair, you wonder, is it ripply-soft like velvet? Rough like stubble?

And then it's time for the set. Charlie points you to a chair behind the band, at the back of the stage.
