Chapter 21 by fredmarley139 fredmarley139

Does your plan work?

Of course

As you look down the path, you see a party of six heroes coming towards you. The party seems evenly split between melee and magic, with no ranged component. Up front are the melee fighters: a male berserker flanked by a female knight and a shield maiden. The berseker wears only a pair of trousers, every inch of him covered in tattoos, and wields a pair of hand axes. He looks like he will be highly susceptible to both the spiders' poison and your darts. The shield maiden is little better, wearing tight fitting leather and furs. She wields the giant shield that is her namesake and single-handed sword. The shield might be problematic for your darts, but only if she can bring it to bear. The knight is wearing proper armor, but no helm and is toting a huge double-headed ax that looks too big for her to wield properly.

Following behind them are the magic users, made apparent by their flowing robes and various amulets. You have no way of telling what their specialties are at a distance, but you can see they're male. The middle one appears to be middle aged and seems to be leading the group. The man to his right was positively ancient, hobbling along, trying to keep up with the group. The man to the leader's left was more of a boy really. He was medium height with a slender build and almost effeminate features. The general lack of armor in the group makes them the perfect target for your trap. Only the female knight has much chance of not being poison and resisting your darts. Hopefully though, she wouldn't be able to wield her ax effectively, and the spiders will be able to tire her out.

The melee fighters, out in front, are the first to be caught. They cry with dismay when they find they are stuck in place. For a moment, you worry that the magic users will realize what is happening. However, they rush forward to help their friends and are caught as well. With all six heroes stuck in place, the spiders waste no time dropping the net of webbing from the trees above.

At the same time, you immediately begin wrapping your roots around the feet of the magic users and start sucking away their mana with your Absorb. You're surprised by the amount of mana their leader has. He must be pretty high level. Odd, the group in general seemed to be rather amateur.

The spiders begin swarming the heroes and poisoning them. As expected, it works pretty well against all the heroes except for the knight. Once, the heroes are poisoned, the spiders back off and cover them with webbing. They dart in to attack every now and again whenever they see an opening. The magic users are next to useless with their mana drained and their hands unable to access any of their magical items. However, you are not expending any mana yourself, and you start to get worried about the buildup. Then, you get an idea. You call out to the spiders telling them to be more aggressive and that you will heal them. Several of them take you at your word and move in closer, while you reach out your vines, doing your best to spray your Herbal Flow to cover the spiders. You turn your attention to the melee fighters. The berserker has activated some sort of ability and is wildly trying to hack anything around him. You quickly begin firing darts at him, hoping for a quick and easy kill. You are rewarded a few minutes later with a chime and a flash of light, thanks to the poisoning and lack of armor. There is a heady rush of XP as you kill the berserker.

Looking for your next target, you turn your attention to the leader, eager for the large amount of XP he will give you. Again, while it takes longer than the berserker, poison and lack of armor causes the engagement to favor you. You savor the rush of XP and examine the other magic users in order to determine your next victim.

You quickly choose the old man, believing his level to be slightly higher than the youth's. Again, your victory is assured and the old man falls, giving you a rush of XP. You pause for a moment and look around the battlefield. Both the boy and the shield maiden are exhausted, barely moving at all, and are almost entirely covered in web. Only the knight is still offering any true resistance, but she too is tired, and, as you watch, a spider leaps onto her back and bites her neck, leaving the knight poisoned. The battle is over. It is only a matter of time until the remaining heroes are subdued. You briefly consider reneging on your deal and killing the rest of the heroes, but you think better of it. You are tired and there are a lot of spiders.

Finally, the heroes stop struggling, and the spiders begin cocooning them in web. The lead spider and his subordinate, the one that practically worships you, approach. "We thank you, Great One, for your aid." Your fanboy says. "Indeed, your assistance was quite useful," says the leader, shooting a glare at your fanboy, "We shall take our heroes now. We shall contact you again if we need more." With that, the spiders depart, taking the three web-wrapped heroes with them.

Good riddance, you mutter to yourself as they leave. You turn away. Suddenly, you feel Dana begin to stir. The fighting must have woken her. You do not particularly feel like telling Dana that had you just killed/enslaved six of her fellow heroes out here in the open. Something tells you she will not react well to that. You could lie to her, but something in you shrinks away from that idea. You want to be honest with Dana, even if it makes her angry with you. That being case, you decide to return to your Lair before Dana fully wakes.

Do you tell Dana what happened?
