Chapter 5 by zankoo zankoo

Does Abbie want to hear about some of the family tree?

No, Abbie will meet everyone over the weekend

"What can you tell me about the weekend? Is there an itinerary? Do you know the venue or the dress code?" She spun around as if trying to find something in the office, but then stopped, realizing that whatever was on her mind wasn't there.

Jake laughed. "That’s a lot of questions. But okay, let's see ..." He glanced down at the invitation in his hand. "I guess ... there’s a QR code on the invitation here. Maybe that opens up something?" He held out the card to Abbie, who took it from him with wide eyes.

"Oh, Jake, this is truly exquisite," she remarked, her voice tinged with a hint of appreciation that surpassed mere aesthetics. Running her fingers delicately over the embossed details and feeling the fine quality of the paper, Abbie couldn't help but notice the expertly crafted calligraphy that adorned the card. With a subtle nod, she acknowledged to herself the unmistakable mark of elegance and sophistication. "These folks know what they're doing!"

"If you say so," Jake said, leaning forward to try to see whatever Abbie was so excited about on the invitation.

"Let's see about this code," Abbie said, waving her phone over the QR graphic on the back of the card. "Oh look, it's a website for their whole wedding!" She held out her phone for Jake to look at.

Jake laughed. "Already, you're accomplishing ten times what I had done."

"You didn't even look at this?"

"Nope." Jake shook his head. He stared a little longer at Abbie's phone, suddenly feeling a slight flutter in his heart. There was something intimate about seeing Abbie's phone, even if all she was looking at was a website for Staci and Phil's wedding. It was like he was getting a glimpse into a part of her own personal life just by seeing her phone, knowing that her phone could just as easily be a text thread or her own camera roll.

Abbie scrolled through the website. "There's a whole schedule here. Look, brunch at a country club, invitation to play golf, boat tour, dinner for the family and wedding parties -- is that you?"

"Nope," Jake said again. "I'm just a normal guest, not an insider."

"Aw, that's a shame. I mean -- look at this restaurant!" Abbie had tapped over to a new site that showed a menu and a photo of some stunningly photographed food.

"I can try to infiltrate the family over the next few days, if you'd like?"

"Ooh, yes. You should totally do that!" Abbie replied with a twinkle in her smile. "Or you could just make it up to me with a killer dinner of our own."

"I think I could do that." Jake nodded, thinking it over. "I'll find something good."

Abbie tapped and scrolled on her phone. "Is this the hotel?"

Jake leaned in to look. "Yeah, that's the place. It seems pretty great."

"It sure does!" Abbie mumbled to herself as she read through parts of the hotel's description. "Pools and hot tubs, that's pretty sweet. Tennis? Hm, not sure about that. But they've got like eight different restaurants on the grounds."

"Perfect. All food, no tennis. I can handle that."

Abbie giggled at Jake. "You'd look cute playing tennis."

"Not as cute as you," Jake countered.

"That's for sure!" Abbie said. "So, let's talk about packing." She put her phone down on the desk. "A few days, that means multiple outfits. Dresses ... probably three or four. A couple bathing suits. I better look good, right?" She kept mumbling to herself about her plans, definitely excited. Jake sat back and watched her, in awe of her energy, her excitement, and most of all, her willingness to take this adventure with him.

Fast forward to the pre-weekend planning ...
