"How about you take me along with you after the movie," you say. "Got another 40 minutes or so to run, right?"

Kath puts her hands on her hips. "And miss 'Whip It'? Tell me another," she says.

Tara laughs. You hear a bit of a hard edge in her tone. Jennifer joins her, her laugh a little higher and lighter.

Luna blinks. "You want to get us some more popcorn, Joe?"

Ten minutes later you're climbing back up the stairs with two buckets of popcorn and four Diet Cokes. You watch to the end of A League of Their Own, which strikes you as a little sappy. The girls seem to loosen up a little during the intermission. You do another snack bar run for candy. You hope Mona is having a good time with Fairouzeh. That must be worth a few points for you, right?

The crowd has thinned out a bit from the crush of young women in sports uniforms and their families, friends, and admirers. The make-out seating in the back of the theater seems full, though. The couples holding hands or kissing are mostly pairs of women. You recall the Pickup Artists' Guide's dire warnings about sports dykes and feel your chest throb with the bruise Karen gave you earlier today.

The next movie begins. Whip It! is watchable. Very watchable, with Ellen Page and the rest of the cast. You chuckle quietly at the violent yet femme-y derby girl names. You had no idea there was a registry, but it makes total sense. From time to time, you feel Kath at your side responding to the movie, tensing up when something exciting is happening, and laughing out loud at the funny moments. Luna is watching as if in a trance, though you see her head tilting from one side to another as though she's leaning into a banked turn.

You could try something with Kath or Luna, hoping the movie is turning them on. Roll +hot (+2) to whisper a suggestion to one, or +hot-1 (+1) for both, or wait till the movie is over.
