Chapter 5 by simmaster simmaster

What now?

Make a run for it!

You don't want to die again. Dying hurts. As the hero approaches with swift steps, you suddenly dart forward and manage to dive in-between his legs. Your short stature lets you pass through with only a bit of difficulty, this difficulty causing him to fall over. The slime takes his moment of incapacitation as its chance to escape as well, and it starts to hop after you. And embarrassingly enough it has little trouble keeping up with you. As mentioned, you are not built for any sort of physical activities. Your little legs can only propel you away from danger so fast, and you can only keep it up for so long before you're out of breath. However the thought of an axe sliding into your back keeps you running, your robe flailing about and getting in the way. You're sure you're going to trip any second.

You hear the annoyed hero coming after you, and panic starts creeping up on you. You rush through the bare corridors desperately looking for other monsters to deal with the hero for you while you do your magic from the relative safety behind them, until finally you run face-first into a wall and flop onto the floor with a feeble "Mieh!".

That's it, then. You await the sensation of your skull being split in two, your eyes tightly shut. You wait for one second, then two, then three. At that point the stress of waiting is unbearable and you open your eyes again, looking behind you to see that the hero has come to a halt just behind you. You turn your head to look in front of you instead, and see that what you ran into wasn't a wall.

Before you towers a large figure clad in thick, spiked armor, two blue eyes glowing within the darkness of its helmet and a halberd in its hand. You recognize it as The Keeper. A monster possibly stronger than the dungeon boss, and supposedly invulnerable. A warrior entirely made of stone, he's able to meld with the floor or walls to travel quickly practically unnoticed. However, he's only supposed to show up when the heroes enter the optional treasure room. Or when a monster leaves their assigned zone.

You give The Keeper a sheepish smile, which is completely concealed by your hood. At first you expect him to crush you straight into the next respawn cycle, but then you notice that he is facing the hero and seemingly paying no attention to you. Could you be so lucky that heroes take priority over trespassing monsters, even if the hero hasn't done anything to attract The Keeper's attention?

You can. Because he walks right across you, almost causing an unintentional **** had you not quickly rolled out of the way. His frame is so wide that you have to press up against the wall just to avoid his feet from squishing you. You then get up to your feet and watch as The Keeper approaches the hero, halberd in hand, whilst the hero is taking cautious steps backwards.

You see your chance and cast a Curse on the hero, to make sure you'll get a share of the XP when The Keeper inevitably beats him to a pulp. You add a Hex for good measure just in case it increases your share, and then you watch him run away from The Keeper, who pursues him with calm steps.

The Keeper is infamous enough in the dungeon for you to know how he operates. He doesn't run after his targets, he just slowly walks after them. However... he doesn't stop. His aggro range extends throughout the entire dungeon, and he always knows exactly where his target is. If they get too far away he'll use his stone-melding ability to pop out of a wall, floor or even ceiling near the poor sucker he's following. The only way to stop him is to leave the dungeon, reach the center of the treasure room, or die. A real stress-inducer... You really don't envy the hero. You've made some attempts to leave your area, and they have all been met by an unpleasant denial from The Keeper.

Then it dawns on you... If he's currently pursuing the hero, does that mean he can't pursue you at the same time? Could you perhaps finally sneak into the higher-level part of the dungeon? Maybe you could talk to some of the dark casters there, or find some neat items to bring back, or just... something new...

Dare you take the risk?
