Chapter 14 by Cantalope Cantalope

How do you adjust?

It's not so hard.

You spend the following days submitting to your mothers every desire: regularly attending tutors, reading books, refreshing etiquette, and even going with her on several outings, quietly following while she gossiped with the other ladies. You loved every second of it. Your tutors were dumbfounded by your sudden fascination in their teachings and were only too pleased to answer all your questions. Miraculously you were gifted with the ability to read common but some of the books were written in a flowing script even Eirene couldn't distinguish (you get the feeling she didn't spend much time in the library) and you make a note to learn this strange language ASAP. Most of the Etiquette came naturally but there were some things you had to scratch you head at (why did it matter which hand you used to pick up a fork?). The outings were one of your favorite parts of your new life, giving you glimpses of the larger world from the safety of mothers domineering presence.

After seeing Eirene and her mother, you had started to wonder if all nobles were beautiful. Meeting with your mothers friends seemed to prove the theory: All were MILFs of regal standing. You were starting to think you had a type...

One day, while you're pouring over one of the indecipherable books in the library, you feel an irritated twinge from Eirene. Hm. Weird, she'd been very good since you'd reintegrated yourself. You lower your barrier slightly, "Is there a problem milady?" Your mocking tone gets the mental equivalent of a sneer but she answers clearly: I thought you had dastardly plans, not restarting my life where I left off. To your incredulity she actually sounds bored, "...you want me to have dastardly plans? I happen to like your life, it's a hell of a lot better than living in a cave." The girl shows zero sympathy: Just DO something already! I'd be bored to tears if I- you slam the mental door in her face, locking your barriers down.

The fact that you, a worm who lived deep in a cave, had more empathy and patience than this spoiled brat was almost more than you could handle. Your fists are clenched and shaking, and you have to take a few moments to simmer down. You feel a twinge of satisfaction from beyond your barriers. The nerve of that girl.

You suppose it would be the monsterly thing to do... keep growing in power or maybe rescue your family from that hole in the ground... but dammit, this place was amazing! You had a home, enough knowledge to keep you satisfied for decades, and the delightful company of the noble ladies...

Maybe you should come up with an end game...
