Chapter 11 by Serefin Serefin

How to proceed...

How about coming to your senses?

As you lay there, soaking in the bath and letting the warm water wash the fatigue of the day away, everything suddenly seems to hit you at once, and you're left with but one question:

WHAT THE BLOODY HELL WERE YOU DOING?!

You were a monster, for Christ's sake (or for the sake of whatever other deity/deities exist)! You weren't supposed to have a quiet life like this, and if you were entirely honest with yourself, you didn't much want one either!

No, you didn't become a parasite for this! You didn't steal a paladin's body just so you could spend your days trying to pass off as human! You took this path because you were tired of getting stepped on! Because you were tired of you and your family being treated like obstacles to be removed, rather than living creatures with their own needs!

Your goal, from the start, has never been to make yourself comfortable. It has been ****, pure and simple. You were going to destroy the humans, and you would use their own bodies to do so.

You shoot up and out of the bath, water splashing out of the tub. You feel like you just woke up from a trance and are just now having your own thoughts again. You briefly consider the possibility that that's exactly what happened. Perhaps some manner of magic-user had put a spell on you when you entered town? But you quickly reason that that's incredibly unlikely, if not impossible. They would have to be monitoring you, or at least monitoring the cave you were in, to know what you had done, as you had done a (even if you did say so yourself) nigh-perfect imitation of Eirene since you returned to town. But then why were you so willing to just give up on your goals like that?

It was at this point you notice Eirene has been unusually quiet. Even when you had tuned out her thoughts completely, you could still notice her presence. But right now, it was as if she had migrated herself to the opposite end of her brain. It doesn't take long for you to put two and two together, and it takes even less time for you to get furious.

"You bitch!"

"Who, me?" Her tone is innocent and casual, a far cry from what it was mere moments ago when she was trying to wrest control of her body from you.

Despite your anger, you can't help but let a smirk creep across her face. "You clever whore... Let me guess: our mental link means we can do more than just talk to each other, huh?" She's silent, so you decide to push further. "So tell me, why exactly did you start? Did you somehow see what I was planning and do it to stop me? Did you see where I was headed and decide to try to protect your precious village?"

You don't get an answer, but it doesn't matter to you. You now know more about the relationship between your mind and your host's mind, which means not only can you take precautions against allowing this to happen in the future, you can maybe look into trying it for yourself (assuming you ever get bored of directly controlling a human, of course).

But that's for later. For now, you need to get back to your own mission. With a swish of your hair, you turn away from the mirror and exit the bathroom. Looking out a window, you note that the sun is hanging low in the sky. Surely it's no more than an hour or two before night fall, and no doubt 'mother' won't allow you to leave once it's dark, so you have to work quickly. As fast as you can, you throw on Eirene's undergarment's and a simple dress. You also grab a large bag lying in the corner you feel would be useful and Eirene's coin purse, stuffed to the brim with gold and silver. Once all is said, you hastily leave the house, ignoring any and all servants who try to address you on the way.

"Where do you think you're going?"

You mentally quirk an eyebrow. "Oh? Does the precious little noble want to talk now?"

"Yes, I do! And more specifically, I want to talk about what you're doing! I mean, you already stole my life, what else could you possibly want?"

You have to resist the urge to laugh. "Sorry, sister, but that won't work on me this time. Fool me once and all that. But don't worry. You'll be back in control of your body very shortly." And with that, you slam a mental door in her face and get back to work. The mixture of anger and fear you feel coming from her ensures you continue with a smile on your face.

You can't stay in Eirene. For starters, the fact she nearly succeeded in making you settle down with her body made you sick to your nonexistent stomach. Sure, there was no chance it could work again, but that knowledge didn't do much to soothe your thoughts. Secondly, she was much too weak. For you to take your **** on this world, you would need to get in control of someone much, much stronger than a paladin who hadn't even reached level 5. But of course, until you could find someone better, she had her uses. For example, the vast amounts of wealth at her disposal...

Your first stop is the local item shop. You barely give him enough time to greet you before hurling a stack of gold on the counter. With that kind of motivation, it isn't long before every poison in the store, along with all the health and mana potions, are tucked safely in your bag. Now that you have some supplies for your next body, it's time to find said body...

Where do you go to find the next (un)lucky adventurer to serve as your host?
