Google translate to the rescue.

When I finish work that night, I was in a rush to get out of there and back to my place to work out what Yangong has written on the piece of paper. I skip the usual after-work drinks with Aaron and the other security guys and am about to leave when Holly’s blonde head appears from underneath the bar where she was cleaning up.

“Are you going? I wanted to see if you could give me a lift home and talk?” she asks.

Holly and I had been sleeping together without officially seeing each other but it had become a bit too complicated with my wayward tendencies. Holly had been hoping to change what would have been an open relationship to a closed relationship but being the young and dumb guy, I was, I’d baulked at the commitment and bolted. Still here she was reaching out to try and mend things one last time perhaps.

“Sorry I’ve really got to scoot Holly. Could one of the other boys give you a lift perhaps?” I offered.

I knew nothing would happen with any of the other security guys after Holly and I getting together but I also knew they wouldn’t leave one of our own bargirls to get home by herself.

“I don’t mind giving you a ride home,” a bright green haired barmaid I hadn’t seen before offered. It must have been her first night and was helping Holly to clean up.

“See. That solves that,” I said, seeing the dejected look on Holly's face before I turned and got out of there.

Back at home I fired up my computer and scanned the symbols onto the screen. Running them through a basic translation engine, I was extremely excited to see that they translated into a series of numbers. Yangong must have written her number out in Mandarin. Pulling out my phone I put the numbers in but when I went to dial it didn’t connect. The machine voice on the line saying, “the number you have called could not be connected. Please check the number and try again.”

Frustrated I tried the number in a number of different combinations. Perhaps they were meant to be read from right to left or up to down. No matter what I tried through I always got the same response. “The number you have called….”

Arrrggghhh!

I gave up when I finally realised that there weren’t enough numbers to make up any sort of phone number. It looks like my quest for the ‘great white whale’ had hit a dead-end right at the very beginning.
